Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to learn the structure of a research paper report (including a master's thesis), the use of scientific and popular science articles, the formatting of references, the requirements for creating tables and images, and the interpretation and presentation of research materials and methods, results and conclusions.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knows the principles of structuring the review of research work, the meaning and subordination of separate sections of the study of scientific literature.
Is able to find scientific literature in databases and work with it, distinguishes scientific from popular scientific literature and textbooks.
Is able to create a description of the materials and methods used in the work and the results.
Is able to create lists of bibliographic references according to different requirements
Is able to present the results of his / her research orally.
Is able to appropriately and logically structure the review of a research paper, presenting the results in textual, tabular or pictorial form, to use scientific literature for both theoretical substantiation and reasoned discussion.
Theoretical knowledge will be tested and evaluated in a test, but skills and abilities will be acquired and evaluated in practical work.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. The structure of the master's thesis, tasks and content of individual chapters in the context of the overall thesis. (lect. 1h)
2. Creating a work title. Introduction, aim and tasks. (lect.1 h)
3. Searching for LLU subscribed databases and literature in them. Literature review and its arrangement. Use of different types of publications in the master's thesis. Creating references to literature sources. (lect.2 h, pr.w.4 h)
4. Creating a bibliography, using Mendeley or other programs to compile a bibliography. (lekc.1h, pr.w.4 h)
5. Description and sequence of methods used in the study. (lect.2 h, pr.w.4 h)
5. Results and their evaluation - the main section of the master's thesis. Necessity, preparation and formatting requirements for tables and images. (lect.1 h, pr.w.4 h)
7. Discussion: interpretation of research results under specific conditions. Conclusions and their compliance with the specific research - the answer to the questions raised in the aim and tasks of the work, the hypothesis. (lect.1 h, pr.w.4 h)
8. Academic honesty. Plagiarism: how to avoid it. (lect.1 h)
9. Sections to be added voluntarily: thanks; attachments. (lect.1 h)
10. Submission of the work, reviewing, answers to the reviewer. (lect.1 h)
11. Preparation of a publication (structured summary of the research) for the collection of the Student Scientific Conference. (lect.2 h, pr.w.4 h)
12. Ability to read and follow the rules for preparing a Master's thesis or other research report. (lect.1 h)
13. The essence of the presentation, its structure, preparation of illustrative materials. Relationship between speaker and audience; questions and answers. (lect.1 h, pr.w.8 h)

Requirements for awarding credit points

Tests marked with a grade consist of:
• successful theory test;
• successful practical work;
• independent work performed.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The student develops the independent works in accordance with the teacher's instructions, preparing for the practical work and developing them.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The mark of the study course is formed from the evaluation of the test, practical work and regular work.
