Course abstract

In this study course students will work on their course project – design project for a reinforced concrete / masonry building. Students will master their skills in all the main design aspects including evaluation of lateral stability, use of limit state design for slabs, beams, columns, walls, and foundations, application of rules for detailing and durability, presenting the results in the project drawings. Students will learn to use a BIM compatible software (FEM Design) to perform the structural analysis and design of the structures.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Students will gain skills to use the limit state design method, section analysis and structural analysis in the design of reinforced concrete structures – defence of the course project.
2. Students will gain skills to present their design result in drawings and defend them orally – defence of the course project.

Course Content(Calendar)

Week 1: Predesign of the assigned building’s main structures.
Week 2: Loads and load combinations.
Week 3: Internal forces in the sections of slabs, beams, columns.
Week 4 and 5: Design of floor slab.
Week 6 and 7: Design of beams.
Week 8: Design of a column or a wall.
Week 9 and 10: Design of column and wall footings.
Week 11: Detailing rules.
Week 12: Drawings.
Week 13: Defence of the course project.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The course is passed when the course project is prepared and successfully defended.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Course project must be prepared independently outside the classes of this course. The progress of the design process must be presented during consultation on regular bases.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The grade depends on the quality of Course project and the level of knowledge presented during the defence. In addition the discipline of the student is taken into account. The maximum grade is possible only for those who present the progress of their work on regular bases (every week) during the whole semester. If the work is first presented fully finished only at end of the semester, the maximum grade is 6. Students can increase their grades by 1 or 2 points (up to 9 or 10) by submitting some extra calculations or drawings.
