Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to provides an insight into the studies as a process, provides an insight of goals, tasks and structure of Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, introduces the normative documents of the LBTU and the study base. The course provides information about the structure and traditions of the Faculty of Forest and Environmental sciences, gives an insight into the history of Jelgava city, LBTU and the castle. Students get the first idea about the specialty of Geoinformatics and remote sensing and its current tasks, get acquainted with the study plan, get acquainted with the databases of the Fundamental Library of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, obtain bibliographic information.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Understand the specifics of knowledge acquisition in higher education - independent, practical work.
2. Knows and is able to apply the normative acts of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies in the study process - independent, practical works.
3. Is able to independently apply bibliography in the study process - independent, practical work.
4. Knows the directions of geoinformatics and remote sensing in public and private institutions - independent, practical work.

Full-time studies:
Visit to the Vecauce study and research farm of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies

3. The role and tasks of student self-government (lecture 1h)
4. Insight into the history of Jelgava city, Jelgava City Museum - Akademia Petrina (lecture 1h)
1st practical work - visit to Jelgava Castle (2h)
5. History of LBTU and castle. (lecture 1h)
2nd practical work - visit to LBTU and castle museum (2h)
6. LBTU structure and normative documents (lecture 2h)
3rd practical work - getting acquainted with LBTU normative documents and their application (2h)
7. History of the Faculty of Forest and Environmental sciences, its structure and traditions (lecture 1h)
8. History and structure of the Institute of Land Management and Geodesy (lecture 1h)
9. Rquirements in the development and design of study papers (lecture 2h)
3rd practical work - application of requirements in the development and design of study papers (4h)
10. Basics of bibliography. LBTU library structure, book fund, library usage regulations (lecture 1h)
4th practical work - getting acquainted with LBTU FB catalogs, finding information (4h)
11. Profession “Geoinformatics Engineer” and its current issues (lecture 1h)
12. Aim, tasks and study plan of the professional bachelor study program “Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing” (lecture 2h)
13. Technical requirements for drawing up documents and language of documents (lecture 1h)
5th practical work - development and design of various documents (2 h)

Part-time studies:
All topics specified for full-time studies are implemented, but the number of contact hours is 1/2 of the specified number of hours

Requirements for awarding credit points

Mark of test work consists of:
• written test paper on the theoretical part of Introduction into Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing.
• completed independent work

• received an assessment of practical work

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Studies of scientific and study literature (LBTU normative documents, monographs, scientific articles and their collections, conference and seminar materials, specialized scientific periodicals) required for the acquisition of professional competencies of the study course.
Preparation of descriptions of practical works according to the scope determined by the lecturers.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

1. The mark is obtained after the examination of knowledge in a written test at the end of the study course and summarizing the results of practical and independent work in the study course.

2. After completing the practical work and preparing their descriptions, it is assessed whether students demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the specifics of knowledge acquisition at the university, understand and are able to responsibly apply LBTU normative documents, whether students have acquired skills to use bibliographic materials independently and responsibly, or knows the directions of geoinformatics and remote sensing.
