Course abstract

The study course is intended to provide an in-depth knowledge in application of geographic information systems to solve current challenges in environmental protection and water management, and develop practical skills in working with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. As part of elaboration of the course project, students prepare, analyze and visualize geospatial information and apply methods and tools relevant to the assignment.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Upon the completion of this course students will have:
• knowledge and understanding in application of geographic information systems in environmental protection and water management in order to solve current challenges;
• a set of skills to create new and download existing and publicly available geospatial information including vector data and raster data, ability to work with ArcGIS Pro software independently to prepare, analyze and visualize geospatial information, skills to create interactive maps using ArcGIS Online;

• competence to critically evaluate the quality of available geospatial information, depending on the content of the assignment students will be able to select and apply relevant geospatial information and suitable methods and tools to process and analyze geospatial information (the course project).

Course Content(Calendar)

Full time intramural studies:
1. Examples of application of geographic information systems for solving current challenges in environmental protection and water management (2 h).
2. Download of existing and publicly available geospatial information and preparation of new geospatial information including vector data and raster data according to the content of the course project (2 h).
3. Application of ArcGIS Pro software - gathering and processing of geospatial information including creation of geodatabase, feature dataset and feature class, editing of attribute table (2 h).
4. Application of ArcGIS Pro software - Spatial Analyst Tools - Hydrology (3 h).
5. Application of ArcGIS Pro software - Spatial Analyst Tools - Interpolation (3 h).
6. Application of ArcGIS Pro software - Spatial Analyst Tools - Raster Calculator (3 h).
7. Application of ArcGIS Pro software - Spatial Analyst Tools - Surface (3 h).
8. Migration of geospatial information and maps from ArcGIS Pro to ArcGIS Online (2 h).
9. Creating and publishing of interactive maps in ArcGIS Online (3 h).
10. Defense of the course project (1 h).

Part time extramural studies:
All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number indicated in the calendar.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The course project has to be developed, defended and evaluated with a successful grade.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students should independently elaborate the course project by using the information presented in practical works and recommended literature.
The independent work consists of identification, acquisition and compilation of geospatial, statistical, visual or other information for further applications in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final evaluation upon completion of this study course will depend on the quality of the course project prepared by students, where specific qualitative criteria will be defined at the beginning of the study course. The defense of the course project and answers provided to questions about the content of the course project will also be included in the evaluation process.
