Course abstract

The course covers the identification and analysis of key control points at all levels of business planning and for the main kinds of business activities of enterprises, which results in determining controlling parameters. The main advantage of the course is the development of systemic knowledge of controlling in business. The course's main focus is the creation of groups of common performance indicators for analysis and control for different levels of plans and planning.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge
1. Students will be able to: demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the substance, role, priorities and strategies of planning - multiple choice test, case studies
2. Demonstrate the conceptual knowledge and understanding of planning and controlling performance indicators and relevant regularities - practical assignments, a test with calculations
Professional skills
1. Independently apply planning theories and planning and controlling approaches - case studies, group work
2. Define planning problems and come up with potential solutions based on calculations - practical assignments, calculations
Soft skills
1. Independently plan and structure learning - multiple choice test, a test with calculations

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Plans and planning- the nature, importance and functions. Planning levels and planning responsibilities / functional systems. (lectures - 2 h)
2. Planning methodology. Planning principles and methods. (lectures - 2 h; practice - 2 h)
3. The types and levels of plans and their main objectives. (lectures - 4h; practical works - 2h
4. Control and Controlling- the nature, functions, tasks, methods and tools. (lectures - 2h)
5. Controlling tools and implementation in business decisions. (lectures - 1h; practical work - 4h)
6. Organization of controlling system in enterprises. (lectures - 1h)

7. Establishment of a controlling system - basic indicators, development, identification and analysis of indicators. (practical work - 4h)

Requirements for awarding credit points

The course includes two tests with calculations. Group work (case study) and a multiple choice test to be taken during practice work in classroom. Final assessment of the study course – final grade (mark) is given as an accumulative assessment of the study results.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Within the framework of the study course description for independent work is given 56 hours. Independent studies (work) are organized as follows: preparing for multiple choice test (20 hours); preparing for group work (case studies) (6 hours); learning and preparing for tests with calculations (15 hours for each test).

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final grade in the study course is formed by:
20% Multiple choice test – Nature, role, priorities and strategies of planning;
5% Case studies, group work - Priorities and strategies of planning and a map of strategies (mapping);
35% test with calculations - Revenue/cost control calculations for a particular planning problem;

40% test with calculations - Product Strategy and Solving a problem of a Product Strategy and a Product Plan by the ABC/XYZ method.
