Course abstract

Environmental factors its influence on land management. Basics about rural development. Land as an environmental segment and resources of agricultural production. Land resources inventory. Maps and its use. Cadastre. Land register. Basics about type of land use and land utilisation – classification, characterization, delineation on landscape and on maps. Land evaluation: basics, objectives, methodology. Farm specialization and organization of land use in farm related to the land value. Land monitoring system in Latvia. Characterization of Latvia agricultural land: status and tendencies. Territorial planning – objectives and relationship with farm land resources management. Institutions responsible for Latvia land resources management.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students will get a knowledge and understanding about the basic issues in land management on the farm level. To obtain skills in the use of cartographic and normative materials. Development of ability for land use and resources planning on the farm level. Written test.

3. Geospatial information (maps, survey plans etc.). Geographical information of field register. 2 h

6. Practical aspects of land evaluation. Soil productivity assessment. 2 h
7. Land quality and land use planning. 2 h
8. Institutional framework of land management. 2 h
Practicals
1. Cartographic materials. 2 h
2. Designations of land use. Calculations of distances and areas. 2 h
3. Construction of map legend. Land resources inventory for model farm. 2 h
4. Land cadastral evaluation. 2 h
5. Land use planning for model farm. 2 h
6. Analysis of territorial pattern of model farm. 2 h

7. Survey of crop production for model farm. 4 h

Requirements for awarding credit points

During semester – home work, seminar, tests. Individual work. Cumulative grade (tests, individual work, activity score). All practical tasks and tests successfully completed.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

1. Individual task for students – land plan for model farm and descriptions of tasks during practical works.
2. During semester – presentation of materials related to the practicals.
3. Two tests related to the theoretical part of studies.

4. Final presentation of practical work, discussions.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Cumulative exam, includes assessment of two theoretical tests, individual studies, activity score and final presentation of practical task.
