Course abstract | |
This course will build upon students’ previous English language knowledge according to Level B2 by utilizing and expanding it in a professional and “business” context. The course is organized to acquire communication skills in order to improve the communication process in the English language by using appropriate means of the language. | |
Learning outcomes and their assessment | |
Students know terms from the field of:
- university education, business organisations, companies (Test No 1); - labour market, job advertisements, business activities, retailing, banking, marketing, advertising (Test No 2). Students are able to apply professional terminology and communicative skills: in writing essays, business letters; orally in discussions, dialogues, role plays, giving a presentation. Students can use professional foreign language in order to apply English creatively in spoken and written communication for professional activities, student mobility and in academic environment. |

2.Effective communication, rich and lean media, steps of communication 2h 3. Careers, steps of a career, difference between jobs, careers, etc. 2h 4.CVs and cover letters, using action words, improving poorly written cover letters (Test #1) 2h 5.Interviews, common interview questions, how to avoid illegal questions, practice interviews 2h 6.Corporate culture, fitting in, unwritten rules of a company 2h 7.Hierarchy, the roles of a publicly-traded company, divisions/departments 2h 8.Daily business writing, formatting an email, neutral language (Test #2) 2h 9.Introduction to marketing, meaning of "market," modern forms of marketing 2h 10.Corporate responsibility, credos and mission statements, analysis of business priorities 2h 11.International business, globalism, multi-national corporations 2h 12.Diplomatic language and behavior, softening language, customer service, behaviour terms.2h 13.Finance, financial terms, functions of financial documents (Test #1) 2h 14.New business, ways to fund a start-up, pros and cons, formatting of business plans 2h 15.Business presentations, effective preparation, register and vocabulary 2h 16."Shark Tank" elevator speeches, business plans presented 2h |

Requirements for awarding credit points | |
Assessment: Formal test. It is made up of cumulative assessment. Successfully written 3 tests, the glossary of terms for each topic, timely completed home works, completed individual work (business plan and presentation). Tests and home works are with a positive evaluation. The number of missed classes shall not exceed 20%. | |
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work | |
Individual work:
1.Written business plan – 10,000 printed marks with more than 30 terms from texts read during the course 2.Pair or group presentation (5 - 8 minutes) about the business plan. |

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes | |
The cumulative assessment is composed of the grades in tests, home assignments, assessment during classes and a presentation of the individual work. The grade in tests is successful if at least 70% of the answers are correct. | |
