Course abstract
Basics of dendrology and introduction, classification of woody plants and garden flowers, their biological and ornamental properties, methods of propagation of ornamental plants and technologies for growing plants.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
1. Will gain knowledge of dendrology, historical aspects of tree plant introduction, gene pool, propagation and breeding technologies and their application and use in nurseries - tests 1 and 2, homework
2.Will be able to apply, analyze, accumulate and use information on current issues in the field of plant breeding - Practical works

7.Ecological factors importance in plant growth and development. - 1h

6.Compilation of a description of Gymnospermae according to a certain system:
•name of the plant in Latin and Latvian;
•range of distribution;
•height;
•crown width, shape;
•morphological and decorative features of the needles;
•morphological characteristics of seeds, cones, ripening time;
•growth requirements;
•use in greenery.

9.Compilation of a description of creepers according to a certain system:
•name of the plant in Latin and English;
•range of distribution;

•morphological characteristics of seeds and fruits, ripening time;
•growth requirements;
•use in greenery.
10. Seminar on selected nursery specialization. Work presentation.

The written examination.
Final grade is made from semester cumulative grade:
• Test 1 10 points
• Test 2 10 points
• Report 10 points
• seminar 10 points
• practical work 10 points
• Exam 50 points.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
1. Terminology – electronica submission.
2. Seminar - independent presentation preparation and oral presentation on the chosen topic
3. A description of the plants used in the garden design electronica submission.
4. Cuttings of plants for vegetative propagation, description of propagation methods will use - submitted during practical classes.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The assessment of the study course examination is cumulative. It is made up of the grades of the examination, tests during the semester and home assignments.
The grade is successful if at least 50% of the questions of tests or the examination are correct.

The assessment requirements of home assignments and a practical task of the examinations is included in the instructions of the home assignments or practical task. The examination grade is calculated as an arithmetic mean of examination assignments grade and the mean of grades obtained during the semester (a mean arithmetic grade of tests and home assignments).
