Course abstract
Students get acquainted with the processing of crude oil. They obtain knowledge about fuel specifications, standards and use, the burning of fuel in Otto and diesel-motors, determination of octane and cetane number. Students acquire the lubricants’ classification system in the world (SAE, API, ACEA, ISO, NLGI), as well as the choice principles of lubricants.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
•Acquires expertise in oil extraction and processing, classification of motor fuels, their standards and use, fuel burning in Otto and diesel engines – Test No. 1
•Acquires skills in determining octane and cetane numbers and using oil classification systems worldwide – laboratory works
•Capable of selecting motor oils, transmission oils, industrial oils and ointments for the equipment concerned – Test No. 2
Course Content(Calendar)
1.Description of energy resources in the world and Latvia. (1 h lect.)
2.Oil extraction and processing processes. Extraction of various fuels. (1 h lect.)
3.Characteristics of petrol. Diesel properties. Methods and equipment for testing properties. (1 h lect., 2 h lab.w.)
4.Petrol additives. Diesel additives. Race fuels. (1 h lect., 2 h lab.w.)
5.Fuel burning in Otto and diesel engines. (1 h lect., 2 h lab.w.)
6.Biofuels. (2 h lect., 2 h lab.w.)
Test No. 1: fuel properties, testing and basic principles of combustion.
7.Aging and dilating of machines and equipment. Types of friction. (1 h lect.)
8.The viscosity of the oils. Viscosity index. Oil additives. (1 h lect., 2 h lab.w.)
9.Classification of motor oils and transmission oils. Oil performance tests. (1 h lect., 2 h lab.w.)
10.Classification of industrial oils. (1 h lect.)
11.Two-stroke motor oils. (1 h lect.)
12.Obtaining, characterisation, classification of ointments. (1 h lect.)
13.Obsolescence and loss of quality of oils and ointments. (1 h lect., 2 h lab.w.)
14.Technical fluids. (2 h lect., 2 h lab.w.) Test No. 2: Properties, classification and testing of oils and technical fluids.
Requirements for awarding credit points
Accumulative overall test with a grade. Laboratory works created and defended, tests - written.

Preparation for tests and laboratory works.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The overall assessment of the study course depends on the evaluation of the tests. The final grade of the study course will be calculated as the arithmetic mean of two tests. Student can get a successful mark for test if at least 50% of the test questions are answered correctly.
