Course abstract
The aim of the study course is to acquire design and operation of the heat sources, water and steam boilers, those component parts: steam superheaters, water economizers, air preheaters. Boiler water parameters and water treatment , the steam quality assurance, the composition of flue gasses and measures of emission reduction are analyzed. Principles and operation of heat pumps are obtained. The construction of heat supply networks and basics of their calculations, pipes and insulation, heat exchangers calculation methods are included.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledges - the types, structure and operation of water and steam boilers and their separate components, as well as the construction and operation of the equipment providing them, the type of heat pumps and heat exchangers, the basics of construction, operation, construction and characteristics of heat nets - laboratory work, tests 1, 2, 3;
Skills - to perform the assessment of the parameters of the boiler equipment, perform basic heat grid calculations, perform the basic heat exchanger calculation - home work, examination. Competence - the assessment of the energy flow for the heat sources and transmission networks; the analysis, assessment of heat flow formation factors and the selection of heat generation and supply improvement solutions - examination.

Requirements for awarding credit points
A written exam.
The exam consists of three topics:
1. Boiler plants, their characteristics;
2. Boiler water preparation, emissions;
3. Heat nets, heat pumps and heat exchangers. A student shall be admitted to the examination only if all 3 tests have been credited, the work of the laboratory has been worked and defended, and the home work has been credited.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Home work must be performed. Preparation to tests and exam.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The assessment of the study course examination shall consist of the sum of the number of points obtained:
- the correct comprehensive, broad answer: 3 points,
- a correct answer with small incompleteness or small errors: 2 points,
- a reply containing only correct basic concepts but without explanation or containing essential errors: 1 point,
- there is no answer, the answer is wrong, there are very serious errors in the answer: 0 points. By getting 9 points, there is the possibility of conducting interviews that result in a 10 – excellent mark being obtained by the student showing the appropriate knowledge and understanding.
