Course abstract
Aim: to strengthen the theoretical knowledge acquired at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and to develop practical skills under the guidance of private practicing veterinarians. The Large animal practice II program contains tasks for the 4th year students of veterinary medicine carried out under the supervision academic staff on the teaching and research farm Vecauce. Students improve their practical skills in gynecological, clinical examination of farm animals and different therapeutical, surgical and preventive manipulations
Learning outcomes and their assessment
After completing the course student will have:
Knowledge of application of the obtained clinical courses into practice. Valueded by a licensed veterinarian at the place of practice. The rating is given in the description.
Skills: clinical examination of animals, diagnostics of contagious, internal, surgical diseases, and pathological anatomy in large animals as well as carrying out therapeutic and preventive measures, basic skills of animal gynecological examination and assistance in parturition, artificial insemination of large animals. Valueded by a licensed veterinarian at the place of practice. The rating is given in the description. Competences – students will be able to analyze clinical cases and evaluate the entire herd health situation. Valueded by a licensed veterinarian at the place of practice and by teaching staff evaluating the submitted practice documentation and clinical cases presentation. Evaluation - the assessment of the end-of-study course examination is “passed/failed”.

Requirements for awarding credit points
Possitive evaluation in practice “Large animal pactice I”, the diary of “Large animal practice II”, the practice report of “Large animal practice II”, the writen description from the practice veterinarian about student, presentation of two clinical cases on the topic of reproduction in practice defense.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Professional practice at practicing veterinarians in Latvia or abroad. Working under the guidence of a veterinarians, the trainee has the opportunity to be in different animal farms, to evalute and compare the conditions of keeping, feeding and other factors influence of the health and productivity of the animals. Everydays accomplishments are recorded in the practice diary with a wider description in the report. At the end of practice, the diaries and reports are signed and stamped by the practice veterinarians. The student submits the practice documentation to the LBTU e-studies system within five working days after the end of the practice to the practice supervisor at the Clinical Institute and receives approval for the preparation of a presentation on two clinical cases related to reproduction.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
Test in "Large Animal Practice I", diary and a report in Large Animal Practice II, veteriarian report about student, control of theoretical and practical skills, presentation of 2 different clinical cases of practice. Assessment - formal test with a mark.
