Course abstract | |
The aim of the course – in the second part of the animal reproduction course, students learn Veterinary gynecology, which examines diseases of the genital organs of various species of female animals (cows, mares, sheep, goats, pigs, bitches, and cats) that can be observed outside of pregnancy, childbirth and the normal postpartum period. And their importance in the origin of infertility, mammary (udder) physiology, and diseases.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledge of congenital and acquired diseases of the genital organs of various species of female animals (cows, mares, sheep, goats, pigs, bitches, and cats), which can cause changes in the secretion of the mammary glands (udder) and the composition of milk. Type of knowledge test - 4 tests
Skills – perform clinical examination of reproductive organs and mammary glands (udder) and provide emergency first aid. Identify and explain pathological processes in the reproductive system, including mammary glands (udder), and recommend measures that ensure the future use of animals in production. Testing of practical skills with an animal. Competence – by the acquired knowledge and skills to independently perform a clinical case report analysis (CCRA), choosing one case from Large Animal Practice II related to the postpartum period and subsequent reproduction of farm animals. |
|
Course Content(Calendar)
1.Postpartum pathology of various species of animals (cows, mares, sheep, goats, pigs, bitches, and cats) (birth injuries, ovarian function disorders, uterine inflammations) – 8 hours of lectures and 6 hours of practical work.
1st test. Pathology of the postpartum period 2.Reproduction of cattle (dairy and beef), sheep, goats, pigs, and mares and evaluation of reproductive parameters - 8 hours of lectures and 10 hours of practical work. Reproduction of sheep, goats, pigs, mares, dairy, and beef cattle. 3.Functional anatomy, histology, physiology, examination of the udder. Mastitis classification, diagnosis, treatment, prevention - 6 hours of lectures and 6 hours of practical work. 3rd test. Udder health, mastitis. 4.Infertility (symptoms, congenital, functional infertility). Infectious and invasive diseases as causes of infertility. |
Requirements for awarding credit points
Successfully completed 4 tests and one Clinical case report analysis (CCRA).
Absence of lectures and practical works are not more than 30% of the total number of lessons. If missed lectures and practical works are more than 30% of the total number of lessons, then the course must be repeated. In case of delay in practical work with animals, the student has to do that at MPS "Vecauce", having previously agreed with the farm's veterinarian. |
|
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Clinical case report analysis (CCRA) on reproduction of farm animals (disease, methods used in reproduction, etc.), within the framework of which the student must perform an in-depth literature analysis and case description, guided by the guidelines of the reproduction course CCRA. The case description should be supplemented with a study of scientific and specialized literature (at least 10 literature sources). It should be submitted in written form to the lecturers of the subject, with a volume of up to 10 pages. After submitting the written form of the work, it must be presented orally at the end with a 5-7 minute illustrated PowerPoint presentation, expressing the most important information about your topic, answering questions, and justifying the knowledge provided. The work must be submitted and defended within the deadline set by the course leader.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
Oral and written knowledge tests (in a 10-point system) during lectures and practical work. Control of practical skills in animals. The final evaluation grade comprises the average value of the oral exam, four tests, and the CCRA evaluation.
