Course abstract
The goal of this study course is to introduce students to the legislative process of Latvia and The European Union, the types of legislative acts of Latvia and The European Union; The most important requirements regarding actions in the field of control of animal infectious diseases, requirements for the marking and registration of animals, the procerure for registration of medicines, its distribution, use and documentation; types of animal feed, the requirements regarding feed quality and safety; principles of action regarding by-products of animal origin and waste management in institutions of veterinary practice.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledge – to understand the relevant legislation and its application, the state veterinary supervision and its principles, as well as the rights, obligations, and responsibilities of practicing veterinarians – 4 tests.
Skills – to identify and apply relevant legislative acts of Latvia and the European Union in professional work for specific cases – seminars. Competences – to know and comply with the requirements of normative acts in veterinary practice, working in state institutions of veterinary and food safety supervision, and in other fields related to animal keeping, transport, trade, distribution and use of medicines, feed distribution, and handling of animal by-products – seminars.

1. Study course Organization of Veterinary Services, its importance and content; The veterinarian's role in society; Legislative system in Latvia. Types of legal acts in Latvia – 4h lectures.
2. The legislative process in the European Union; Types of legal acts in the European Union – 2h lectures, 2h seminars.
3. Test. Farm animal identification, registration I; Herd and holdings – 2h lectures.
4. Farm animal identification, registration II. Pet animal identification, registration; The responsibility of the veterinarian and reporting of events. Non-commercial movement of pet animals I – 4h lectures, 2h seminars.
5. Non-commercial movement of pet animals II; Pet animal passports; Competitions, markets, auctions, exhibitions with animal participation - 2h lectures, 2h seminars.
6. Test. Types of veterinary practices institution – 2h lectures.
7. Medication in veterinary practices, its circulation I – 2h lectures.
8. Medication in veterinary practices, its circulation II; Organic farming. - 2h lectures, 2h seminars.
9. Test. Animal infectious diseases, animal health law I – 2h lectures.
10. Animal infectious diseases, animal health law II - 2h lectures, 2h seminars.
11. Trade (veterinary certificates, certification). Legislation on animal feed – 4h lectures, 2h seminars.
12. Waste, its management in veterinary practices - 2h lectures, 2h seminars.
13. Animal by-products, their circulation; Animal cemeteries - 2h lectures, 2h seminars.
14. Test. Related areas of Veterinary medicine - institutes, laboratories, medication research - 2h lectures, 2h seminars.
Requirements for awarding credit points
The study course concludes with a cumulative examination, the grade of which is calculated as the average of four successfully completed tests. Absences from seminars are not more than 30% of the total number of lessons. If the unexcused absences are more than 30% of the total number of seminars, then the course must be retaken.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Independent study of normative acts follows the tasks specified in the seminars, according to the topic of the lectures. This independent work complements the seminars and helps prepare participants for discussions. This work can be done in groups or individually and includes case analysis.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
Study course tests are evaluated in accordance with the criteria of the 10-point system scale indicated in the LBTU Study Regulations. In order to get a successful grade in test, students have to specify at least 70% of the correct answers.
