Course abstract
The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the study process and the field of veterinary medicine. In the 1st semester of the 1st year, students get acquainted with the historical development of veterinary medicine, the achievements of veterinary medicine in the disease prevention and treatment fields, the protection of people, animals and the environment, the circulation of safe and harmless food products of animal origin, the qualifications of a veterinarian and the fields of professional activity today in connection with the EU and international organizations. The students also get acquainted to the study system and organisation of the study process at the university, related normative and legislative acts. As well as learns the requirements of Clinical Case Report Analysis (CCRA) formatting.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledge - understanding of the structure and organisation of LBTU, VMF, governmental and non-governmental organisations related to veterinary medicine, know achievements and history of veterinary medicine and ethics – 1 test

Skills – successful use of the library information system and databases to research scientific articles, ability to write and format a clinical case and report analysis – practical and independent work
Competence – to know and follow all documents related to LBTU and VMF, to carry out independent analysis of scientific databases, know information about non-governmental and national organisations related to veterinary medicine and follow ethics.
Course Content(Calendar)
1. Introduction, LBTU and VMF structure. Visiting the LBTU Museum (4 h).
2. Study process organization (2 h).
3. Students' non-university activities and student non-governmental organizations (2 h).
4. Study documents, laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia and the LBTU related to the study process (2 h).
5. Library information systems and databases (4 h).
6. History of veterinary medicine development in the world and Latvia (4 h).
7. Veterinary medicine nowadays, its role in the national economy (2 h).
8. Experiments with animals: for and against, animal ethics (2 h).
9. The role of animals in the process of veterinary medicine. Veterinarian - regulated profession (2 h).
10. Social and national organisations related to Veterinary medicine (LVA, FVS, EFSA, etc.) (4 h)
11. Methodology of scientific research, student participation in scientific research (6 h).
12. Use of scientific and technical information materials in teaching and research work (2 h).
13. Data analysis and conclusion, compilation of reports, preparation of publications (2 h).
14. Practical work in MPS “Vecauce” (16 h).
Requirements for awarding credit points
Successfully complete one test, visit to MPS "Vecauce", must prepare, present and defend a report according to the CCRA requirements.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Students must independently study the literature and the rector's orders related to the study process. A scientific paper formatted according to the requirements of CCRA must be prepared.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
Study course test is evaluated in accordance with the criteria of the 10 point system scale indicated in the LBTU Study Regulations. To get the final grade of the study course "passed", all tests must be evaluated with a successful grade. In order to get a successful grade in test, students have to specify at least 70% of the correct answers.
