Course abstract
Basic knowledge of Latin gives an understanding of the formation of veterinary medical terms, which is further necessary for successful studies in special study courses. The aim of course is to give konwlegde of the history of the Latin language, phonetics, the grammar of the words used in the terms, the basic principles of creating anatomical, histological, pathological, clinical and pharmacological terms and the structure of the prescription.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledge: basic principles of Latin grammar and formation of veterinary medical terms, basics of prescription writing – 4 tests.
Skills: correctly write, read and use veterinary medical terms in Latin in special veterinary medical disciplines – practical works. Competence: create veterinary medical terms in Latin, evaluate and understand their relevance and applicability in specific cases – independent works.
Course Content(Calendar)
1.History of Latin language. Development of terminology in medicine and veterinary medicine (2,5 h practicals).
2.Latin and Greek alphabet. Latin phonetics. Vowels, diphthongs, consonants, their pronunciation in veterinary medicine. Accent, length and brevity of word syllable (2,5 h practicals).
3.Nouns, their basics of grammar. First and second declinations in nouns. Third declination conjugation groups (2,5 h practicals).
4.Fourth and fifth declination nouns. Inflection of nouns. Formation of compounds form nouns. Anatomical and histological terminology (2,5 h practicals).
5.Adjectives, their basics of grammar. Declination of adjectives (2,5 h practicals). 1st test Latin phonetics, nouns.
6.Degrees of comparison of adjectives. Formation of compounds from nouns and adjectives (2,5 h practicals).
7.Adverbs, their basics of grammar. Degrees of comparison of adverbs (2,5 h practicals).
8.Numerals, their types, basics of grammar. Formation of compounds from nouns and numerals (2,5 h practicals).
9.Prepositions. Prepositions with accusative, ablative, accusative and ablative, genetive (2,5 h practicals). 2nd test Latin adjectives, adverbs, numerals.
10.Prefixes and suffixes. Diminutives. Greek and Latin prefixes in veterinary medicine terminology (2,5 h practicals).
11.Clinical terminology. Term principles of formation Greek and Latin synonims in terminology of veterinary medicine. Latin terms used in history of disease and diagnosis (2,5 h practicals).
12.Verb, their use in veterinary medicine terminology, basics of grammar. Conjugation in the present. Active and passive voice. Imperatives and conjunctives (2,5 h practicals). 3rd test Clinical terminology.
13.Latin Chemical Nomenclature. Latin names of chemical elements and compounds (2,5 h practicals).
14.Latin pharmacological terminology. Medication names (2,5 h practicals).
15.Pharmaceutical forms. Abbreviations used in prescription. Prescription, its structure. Adverbs and verbs used in prescription (2,5 h practicals). 16.4th test Chemical and pharmacological terminology. Prescription (2,5 h practicals).
Requirements for awarding credit points
Absences from classes no more than 20% of the total number of contact hours. If the unexcused absences are more than 20% of the total number of contact hours, then the course must be retaken. Successfully passed 4 tests with written and oral questions. In order to obtain a semester evaluation, students must pass an exam, which is divided into two parts - written and oral. Students with a score of at least 8 in the tests have the opportunity to obtain the cumulative exam grade from the average value of the test scores.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
The independent works are assigned, analyzed and evaluated according to the calendar plan of the study course. Independent works help students better learn new words and terms, as well as consolidate Latin topics learned during lessons.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
Tests are evaluated on a 10-point grade scale. To pass the tests, at least 60% of all questions must be answered correctly. In order to get a test score of 8 points, at least 75% of all questions must be answered correctly. A successful test grade may be corrected only once.
