Course abstract
The study course presents theoretical aspects of cross-cultural communication and the importance of language and other means of communication in the cross-cultural communication process, as well as practically analyses the specific aspects and differences in communication of different cultures, thus developing cross-cultural cooperation skills and improving cross-cultural communication competence
Learning outcomes and their assessment
After finishing the course the students will have:
•knowledge as regards the concept and theories of culture, different cultures, the essence of cross-cultural communication and means of communication appropriate for communication with different cultures; •skills to apply acquired theories, means and knowledge for ensuring successful communication with representatives of different cultures, to overcome cultural barriers and culture shock, as well as to ensure successful cooperation with representatives of different cultures and to work in a multicultural environment; •competence comprising awareness of, understanding, accepting and respecting cultural differences, thus enabling successful management in a multicultural environment, as well as the abilities for evaluating, reflecting and adapting their personal performance within different culture contexts.

2.Different economic organisations within Europe.
3.The concept of intercultural communication. Culture values.
4.The concept of culture iceberg. Cross-cultural issues by Breiger and Byram.
5.The contexts of intercultural communication: cultural, microcultural, environmental, perceptual and sociorelational.
6.Business practices in different countries. Individual presentations.
7.Social etiquette in different cultures. Specific features of national quisine of students' home countries.
8.Dimensions of culture by Geert Hofstede (Individualism, Femininity, High power distance vs. low power distance)
9.Dimensions of culture by Geert Hofstede (uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation vs. short-term orientation)
10.Edward Hall’s concepts of time and space.
11.Richard Lewis model (Linear-active vs. multi-active vs. reactive).
12.Principles of Fons Trompenaars (Universalism vs. Particularism, Neutral vs. Emotional, Specific vs. Diffuse, Achievement vs. Ascription, Sequential vs. Synchronic, Internal vs. External Control).
13.The concept of face. Conflict solutions.
14.The concept of universal, cultural, personal behavior.
15.Gobalisation and its impact on cultures. Lingua Franca.
