Course abstract
The course provides master students with an in-depth knowledge of and skills in freight and passenger transport management and organisational issues at the levels of individual modes of transport and national and international enterprises as well as in establishing, managing and planning a logistics system as well as controlling it at an enterprise. Master students build up an in-depth understanding of how to apply the logistics audit method as well as competence in the matters pertaining to the need, specifics and systems of logistics for enterprises of various industries.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
1.Students will be able to: demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the nature of logistics and its role in the national economy, the latest trends in logistics in Latvia and in the world - independent work, a case study
2.Demonstrate a conceptual knowledge and understanding of a macrologistics system - independent work, practical assignments
3.Demonstrate a specific knowledge and understanding of models and systems for transport management processes and the elements thereof - independent work, practical assignments, a test
4.Demonstrate a specific knowledge and understanding of the types of logistics and economic and management mechanisms and instruments for a particular type of logistics - independent work, practical assignments, a test
5.Independently identify and analyse transport management components by applying proper methods - independent work, practical assignments
6.Independently determine the basic types of logistics and use economic and management mechanisms and instruments for a particular type of logistics for enterprises by applying the analytical approach - practical assignments, group work, a test
7.Analyse endogenous and exogenous factors for a macro logistics system - discussions in classes, a case study
8.Find, critically assess and creatively use information for doing the assignments given and solving problems - practical group assignments, a case study
9.Effectively work in a team, delegate and coordinate the fulfilment of responsibilities, assume responsibility for the results of the group work - case study
10.Present and explain to others the results of the work – presentation

1.Transport Functions. Transport organization and structure in Latvia (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignments – 1 hour)
2.Characteristics of land, water and air transport modes. Combination of transport modes (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignments – 1 hour)
3.Transport and environment. Characteristics of transportation costs. (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignments – 2 hours)
4.Modelling of transport processes (lecture – 1 hour)
5.Organization and management of public transport (lecture – 1 hour)
6.Transportation services, their types and classification (lecture – 1 hour)
7.Calculation of the increased load unit. Determining of the optimal purchase volume. (practical assignments – 2 hours)

9.Provision of transport logistics information. Choosing the best mode of transportation on the route (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignments -2 hours)
10.Logistical aspects of packaging (lecture – 1 hour)
11.Place of inventory in Logistics. Defining of warehouse size, layout and locations. (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignment - 1 hour)
12.Design and selection of cargo delivery systems. Analysis of Transport Service Providers. (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignments - 2 hours)
13.Logistical approach in passenger traffic. International specialization. Need for intermediary services. (lecture – 2 hours)
14.Concept of Logistics, definitions and historical development. Factors of development (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignments – 1 hour)
15.Logistics topicalities in Latvia and global. Macro logistic systems (lecture – 1 hour, practical assignments – 2 hours)

Requirements for awarding credit points
Examination. The Mark consist of:
•Examination – all the topics (40%)
•Practical assignments (20%)
•Group work, a case study, a presentation (10%)
•Test - Transport process simulation (15%)
•Test - Economic and management mechanisms and instruments for the basic types of logistics (15%)

10% are equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale
