Course abstract
The aim of the study course is to acquire knowledge of the basis of mechanized milking physiology, the newest milking and milk primary processing equipment and its development trends, including robotized milking and management, ensuring of qualitative milk production, economic usage of electric energy.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Knowledge of modern technological equipment for milking and pre-treatment of cows, their construction and operation peculiarities, as well as the economic advantage of their use, depending on the size of the cow herd. Knowledge is assessed in tests.
Skills to rationally use modern cow milking and milk pre-processing equipment, ensuring their proper operation and quality milk production. Skills are assessed in practical work, report and work defense.
Competences required for an agricultural specialist in the modernization of cow milking and pre-processing of milk. Competences are assessed in practical work, reports, work defense and test.

1. Development and introduction of mechanisation of milking cows in Latvia - 1h.
2. Cow’s udder and peculiarities of milk discharge, theoretical basis of machine milking - 1h.
3. Milking equipment vacuum systems - 1h.
4. Milk collection systems, constructive calculation - 1h.
5. Automation of milking cows - 1h.
6. Side-by-side type milking equipment - 1h.
7. Cow mechanical movers - 1h.
8. Milking robots - 2h.
9. Usage of cow milking equipment (pr. work) - 4h.
10. Milking equipment. Test - 1h.
11. Milk quality indicators, requirements and possibilities of their assurance - 1h.
12. Automation of milking equipment washing and disinfection - 1h.
13. Theoretical basis of cooling milk, constructive solutions for milk coolers - 1h.
14. Modern cooling machines, peculiarities of their operation - 2h.
15. Rational usage of heat obtained by cooling milk - 1h.
16. Usage of milk primary processing equipment (pr. work) - 3h.
17. Primary processing and storage of milk. Test 1h.
Requirements for awarding credit points
You will be credited if you have successfully completed all laboratory work and written tests.

Preparation for tests, using the literature given in the study program and consulting with the lecturer.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The assessment of the study course test depends on the cumulative assessment of the study course tests. The test mark is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the results of the tests passed.
