Course abstract
Factors of plant life, basic laws of soil management, organic matter balance of soils, soil's improvement. Basics of soil fertility and fertilizers. The tasks of soil tillage. Plant protection. Morphological, biological and economic characteristics of field crops and grasses in Latvia, about seed production of field crops and their quality testing methods, about cultivated field crop varieties in Latvia, the role of perennial grasses, practical methods and cultivation of grasslands. Structure of sowings in the farm, arable and grassland distribution and growing technologies. .
Learning outcomes and their assessment
• Student will obtain knowledge of plant life, soil tillage, soil fertilizing, plant protection, about economically biological characteristics of field crops and grasses in Latvia, using of field crops and grasses for high-quality production, grass forage technologies.
• Skills: planning the soil tillage operations and plant protection measures, soil fertilization. Students are able to determine field crops and grass species by herbarium and seeds sample and are able to analyze methods and techniques of crop cultivation. Student knows how to calculate the arable and grassland production in the area needed for production and to establish plan of agro-technical measures for specific field crop and grass production. • Students are competent to use knowledge in their professional activities at the level of concept.
