Course abstract
The course broadens students’ understanding of legal regulation of employment and the labour market, of job search, human resources management as well as basic principles and establishment of labour relationships. Students learn theoretical and practical aspects of career guidance in accordance with Latvian labour law as well as build up knowledge of and skills in assessing job search resources and a job search plan, drawing up necessary documents (CV, motivation letter, job application letter etc.) and conducting job interviews. The aim of the course is to provide students with in-depth knowledge and skills on job search strategies, labour law and regulatory enactments, as well as to develop competence in their use when providing career support to clients.

Students will be able to demonstrate:
Knowledge:
1.In-depth knowledge and understanding of the nature of labour law, its categories (working and rest time, contracting, etc. labour law institutes) - practical work, first independent work.
2.Knowledge and understanding of the use of labour law frameworks in job search - practical work, first independent work.
3.Conceptual knowledge and understanding of the psychological, social and economic situation of the jobseeker - practical work, first independent work.

4.Able to independently select labour law norms, navigate the institutional basis of labour law and solve job search problems from a legal perspective - practical work; first and second independent work.
5.Able to independently navigate labour law regulatory enactments and analyse client resources in the labour market and the job search process - practical work; first and second independent work.
6.Can independently apply theoretical knowledge and skills in the preparation of CVs, application (motivation) letters, job advertisements and employment contracts - practical work; second independent work.

Course Content(Calendar)
1.General concepts of labour law. Employment relations: concept, subjects, content. (2 hours lecture).
2.Employment contract. Concept and parties to an employment contract. Content and types of employment contract. Procedure for concluding an employment contract. Transfer: concept, types. Distinction between transfer and relocation. Termination of an employment contract. Grounds for termination of an employment contract. Termination of the contract of employment at the employer's initiative. Termination of the contract of employment at the initiative of the employee. Settlement of termination of employment contract. Severance pay. Labour disputes. (lectures 2 hours, practical work 2 hours).
3.Working and rest time. Legal regulation of wages. Concept and types of working time. Concept and types of rest time. Holidays and their types. Legal framework on pay.(lecture 1 hour, practical work 1 hour).
4.Working time. Concept of working time and methods of ensuring it. Legal framework of internal working procedures. Material liability of employees. Employment abroad, rights and obligations of employees. Transfer of staff. Material and social guarantees for employees (1 hour lecture, 1 hour practical work).
5.First independent job - jobseeker's right to work and assessment of the situation - defence (seminar 2 hours).
6.Job search. Methods and techniques. Job seekers' wishes and needs. Motivation and types of motivation for job search. Assessment of the jobseeker's current and potential resources. (lecture 1 hour, practical work 1 hour).
7.Vacancies, types of vacancies. Employer's activities in attracting, assessing and retaining labour. (lectures 1sthour, practical work 1 hour).
8.Installation services. Evaluation of service providers. (lecture 1 hour, practical 1 hour).
9.Active job search methods. Preparation of the necessary business articles (job advertisement, CV, application letter). Activation of the social network in the job search process. (1 hour lecture, 1 hour practical work).
10.Preparing for a job interview. Business etiquette in a job interview. Job interview. Interview procedure and range of questions. Evaluation of the interview process and results. Adaptation of the new employee to the company. Impact of psychosocial work environment on productivity, job satisfaction (1 hour lecture, 1 hour practical work). 11.Second independent work - support (CV, application letter, search for suitable vacancies) in job search - defence (seminar 2 hours).
Requirements for awarding credit points
The course includes:
●practical work to be carried out during practical work in the classroom ●two independent assignments to be carried out outside the authors' class time. Two seminars are also scheduled for the defence of the independent works.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
The course includes 2 independent works:
●The first independent work "Jobseeker's right to work and assessment of the situation";
●The second independent work "Providing support (CV, application letter, search for suitable vacancies) in job search".
The 56 hours of independent work are organised as follows:
●12 hours of preparation for practical work;
●preparation for the two seminars at which the two independent works are defended (2 x 22 hours)
The completion of each independent work is assessed on a 10-point scale. Both independent works have to be defended in the seminar during class. The student must be able to discuss the progress of both pieces of work and justify their results.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The final grade in the course consists of:
30% - attendance at lectures
30% practical work;
20% - defence of the first independent work in a seminar; 20% - defence of the second independent work in the seminar.
