Course abstract
The course provides students with knowledge of the role of ethics and etiquette in mutual communication among officials and private persons as well as gives insight into the basic issues of entrepreneurship ethics and etiquette. The course deals with norms of behaviour accepted in the society, placing a particular focus on international differences in the norms, and builds an understanding of the role of behaviour culture that facilitates and promotes mutual cooperation. The skills developed by the course allow shaping a positive and socially responsible image of the organisation, which, in its turn, contributes to its clients’ trust. The aim is to develop and enhance understanding of business etiquette and communication, providing students with the knowledge and skills for effective, ethical, and professional interaction in both national and international business environments.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Konwledge
•Knows and understands the concepts and essence of ethics and etiquette in the Latvian and international context, and their significance in the business environment - Assignments, Exam.
•Knows and understands the principles of business communication, the factors influencing communication effectiveness and its importance in business - Practical assignments, Exam.
Professional skills
•Understands the principles of ethics and etiquette and their application in business, is able to apply this knowledge in resolving conflict situations - Discussions in classes.
•Recognise the norms of etiquette among the other systems regulating behaviour, assess its role in the society and differentiate various kinds of etiquette - Independent assignments to be done individually and in a group.
•Able to build interpersonal communication, observing the norms of business etiquette in both oral and written communication - Practical assignments and discussions
Soft skills
•Responsibly plan the completion of the assignments given - Independent assignments.
•Give precise information, prepare a presentation and speak in public - Practical and independent assignments.

3.Attributes of etiquette and their application in business. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
4.Dress code and its importance in business communication. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
5.Table manners and business meetings. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
6.Business etiquette in international business. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 3 hours)
7.The use of technology in business communication: Netiquette. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
8.Communication, communication theories, and their application in business. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
9.The interpersonal communication process. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
10.Verbal and non-verbal communication. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
11.Communication barriers and their elimination. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
12.Conflicts, their types, and resolution methods. (Lecture: 1 hour, Practical work: 1 hour)
13.Preparing for a presentation and creating a presentation. Basics of oratory skills (Lecture: 2 hours, Practical work: 2 hours)
Part time extramural studies: all topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar.
Requirements for awarding credit points
Examination
The Mark consists of:
• 60 points for Practical Work Individually and in Groups
1) 20 points on the topic: Business Etiquette in International Business;
2) 20 points on the topics: Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication and Communication Barriers and Their Elimination;
3) 20 points on the topic: Preparing for a presentation and creating a presentation. Basics of oratory skills;.
• 40 points examination – All the topics.
10 points are equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale.
Practical, independent assignments and examination can be submitted only in the time provided for them.
