Course abstract
The aim of a study project is to contribute to the integration of knowledge acquired during theoretical courses in the field of sustainable regional development into practical research, assess the student’s ability to select data and compile information by using information technology, as well as draw independent conclusions and reasoned proposals. The study project consolidates theoretical knowledge of sustainable development of a territory to demonstrate a complex approach for assessing the elements of the regional economy. The study project deals with issues concerning sustainable use of resources, preservation of ecosystem services, socio-economic disparities and their causes and consequences, harmonization of sustainable territorial development interests and the institutional framework. The study project focuses on identifying the problems of sustainable regional development and examining opportunities for development by employing appropriate analysis methods and assessing potential policy measures.

Course Content(Calendar)
Full-time studies:
1. Choice of a topic, the justification therefor, the formulation of a researched problem
2. Determination of the aim and specific research tasks of the study project
3. Creation of the structure
4. Selection of research methods
5. Theoretical framework for the topic
6. Empirical examination of the topic
7. Development of conclusions and proposals
8. Creation a list of references
9. Inclusion of annexes
10. Design, layout and formatting as well as submission of the study project
11. Defence of the study project
12. Evaluation of the study project

Part-time extramural studies: All the topics intended for full-time studies are covered, yet the number of contact hours is ½ of the specified number of hours.
Requirements for awarding credit points
The student must conduct a theoretical and practical study, write and submit a study project designed and formatted according to the LBTU ESAF Guidelines for Writing and Defending Study Projects – an instructional aid for students of the academic bachelor programme Economics delivered by the Faculty of Economics and Social Development. The study project is defended before a committee and the student is awarded a mark.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
During the entire semester, the student must independently produce and submit a study project on a relevant topic related to sustainable use of resources, preservation of ecosystem services, socioeconomic disparities, the causes and consequences therefor, sustainable harmonization of territorial development interests and institutional provision. The length of the study project is 30-35 pages. The student must prepare a presentation to be presented to a committee of the institute, the duration of the presentation is 7-10 min.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
The study project is evaluated on a 10-point marking scale, the lowest passing mark is 4 (almost average). The evaluation considers the content of the study project, compliance with the requirements of the Guidelines and the defence. The study project has been defended if the committee members have agreed on a passing mark for it. If a fail mark has been awarded, the study project must be improved and defended repeatedly within the time specified by the institute.
