Course abstract
The objective of the study course is to give knowledge about physical and mechanical properties of steel and aluminium alloys. Design principles of metal structures according to limit state method including strength, stability and stiffness conditions for structural elements and connections are acquired. Design of beams, axially loaded columns and trusses are discussed.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Student is able to use the material’s mechanical characteristics and their dimensions in calculations, and to check capacity of structural element loaded in tension, compression, bending. Learning assessment is examination.
Course Content(Calendar)
1. Types of steel structures, advantages and disadvantages. History of development of steel structures, 2 hours.
2. Characteristics of steels; classification correspondingly to chemical composition and mechanical properties. Steel profiles, 2 hours.
3. Limit state conditions of steel structures, 2 hours.
4. Design resistance of steel. Limit states and calculation of axially and eccentrically loaded elements, as well as elements loaded in pure bending, 2 hours.
5. Types and materials of welding. Classification of welds and welded connections; calculation and design, 3 hours.
6. Bolted connections, 3 hours.
7. Beam grid and clutch types. Choice and capacity checks of hollow section beams, 2 hours.
8. Calculation and design of welded and bolted beam connections. Improvements of beam structures, 3 hours.
9. Design of cup and base of centrally loaded column. Column design, 3 hours.
10. Classification of steel trusses by application, shape of chords and arrangement of diagonals. Determination of nodal loads and internal forces, 3 hours.
11. Choice and checks of profiles of bar elements, 3 hours. 12. Support joints of trusses and their assembly, 2 hours. 13. Characteristics of industrial building’s frame. Structural and design model. Bracing systems, 3 hours.
Requirements for awarding credit points
Successfully settled examination within which test is settled and homework defended.
Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work
Individual home work must be developed which helps to prepare for test and examination. After test is completed student has a permission to participate in examination.
Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes
Student will have positive assessment in examination where three correct answers out of four must be answered, after test is successfully settled and individual homework defended.
The home work will be assessed basing on two criteria: 1) correctness of results; 2) ability to participate in conversation on calculations and results.
