Course abstract
The 3rd part of course is devoted to mastering the skills for design of timber structures. Course project is carried out according individual data for every student and promotes to implementation of Eurocode 1 and 5 methodology. Course project includes choice of model and static calculation of some bearing system (columns+ truss, three hinged arches or portal frames), calculation of loads and internal forces, dimensioning of elements, calculation and design of joints, composition of bracing system, evaluation of effectiveness of a project and recommendations for sustainability in service.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
Elaboration of design project with timber structures is an excellent opportunity to explore and develop some essential skills needed for future civil engineer such as application of the theoretical principles to the analysis and design of large-scale timber structures, ability to do a good choice for fastener type in joints regarding shear forces to be transferred, to acquire some experience in design work passing majority of "how to do" questions self-dependently or using advices. The expected competence deals with consistent assessment of design data and preconditions for use of timber structures in building as well as to prove his/her project carried out perfectly.
