Course abstract
The course is aimed for mastering the basic knowledge on static equilibrium of structures and elements under external actions (loads). General conceptions of statics. Loads. Supports and reactions. Static equilibrium. Geometric stability and static determinacy. Definitions of internal forces, method of section for simply supported beams. Theory of bending. Dimensioning of section of beam (steel profiles and timber) according to strength and stiffness conditions.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
• Basic knowledge for: 1) statics axioms and basic theorems, 2) geometric stability and definition of a design model more adequate to real structure, 3) static equilibrium and method of section for calculation of internal forces, 4) normal bending, stress analysis.
• Skills: 1) calculation of internal forces in statically determinate beams including diagrams, 2) design of sections of beams. • Competence: acquired ability to assess the load bearing capacity of simplest beams, rational choice of material and section profile regarding loading and environmental conditions.
