Course abstract
Course „Vertebrate fauna of Latvia” is an optional course for students majoring in veterinary medicine and forestry, as well as environmental sciences. The course provides knowledge on Latvian terrestrial vertebrates – amphibians, birds and mammals, their natural history, history of formation of fauna of the Baltic Region, as well as factors impacting their current status and distribution in Latvia. During the course students are required to study and obtain the identification skills of the autochthonous vertebrate species.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
• The course is providing knowledge on Latvian terrestrial vertebrate fauna and methods of animal observation in nature.
• Students acquire skills to identify autochthonous terrestrial vertebrates by sight, voice, as well as tracks and signs. • After completing the course students are competent to make educated decisions on identification, conservational status and distribution of the local terrestrial vertebrate fauna.
