Course abstract
A general introduction to the aims and content of landscape architecture and planning, the idea of land-use planning and design. Man perception and landscape. Factors determining visual character and development of landscape. Geographical landscape levels, their complexity and scale of research. Landscape approach as method. Its role in the interdisciplinary research. Role of human in creation of landscape. Landscape types, their location and characteristic. Landscape ecology principles in landscape planning and architecture. Ecological building. Planning of sustainable landscape development.
Learning outcomes and their assessment
After completing the course student will have:
• knowledge of nature and anthropogenic factors influencing development of Latvian landscape; knowledge of different landscape types, their elements and spatial structure; knowledge of terminology used in landscape architecture;
• skills to assess the role and place of human and nature elements in establishment of social, aesthetic, ecological and functional qualities of landscape; • competence to study place conditions before starting the design of definite territory; to aggregate information about nature and human impact to the landscape; competence to work according to the Latvia legislative documentation; competence to appreciate heritage and nature values in economical development of area.
