Course abstract

Students learn and develop problem-solving experience in veterinary obstetrics and gynecology. The subject of Veterinary obstetrics gives an insight of female animals reproductive and mammary glands physiology before and during pregnancy, parturition and post-partum periods as well as the pathology of delivery, postpartum period and udder and new-born problems. Gynecology course examines female and male animals’ infertility.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: about the female and male reproductive organ neural and humoral regulation, as well as processes of fertilization, pregnancy, parturition and peri-partal period and also physiology and diseases of mammary glands (udder). Assessment of knowledge by 7 tests.
Skills: to organize and carry out animal management prevent reproductive organ diseases and fertility problems including mammary glands (udder), and to recommend measures providing continuous use of animals in production. The ability to provide the first necessary assistance in dystocia– practical works
Competences: according to acquired knowledge and skills to evaluate and resolve animal fertility and/or changes in milk quality problems in one of the herds selected freely.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Successfully completed 7 tests.
Absence of lectures and practical works are not more than 30% of the total number of lessons. If missed lectures and practical works are more than 30% of the total number of lessons, then the course must be repeated.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Independent work related by reproduction of farm animals and/or udder pathologies and changes of milk quality, where student should study in-depth analysis of the literature (at least 10 literature sources) and describe case up to 10 pages. After submitting the written form of the paper, it should be presented orally with an illustrated PowerPoint presentation of 5 to 7 minutes, expressing the most relevant information on subject, answering questions and justifying the information provided. The work must be submitted and defended within the deadline set by the course supervisor.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Oral and written control of knowledge (in the 10 point system) during lectures and practical works. Control of practical skills with animals. Missed practical work with animal’s student performs in MPS “Vecauce” by prior arrangement with farm veterinarian.
7 tests must be evaluated with a successful grade. The final rating mark shall be composed of the average value of an oral exam, 7 tests and an independent work rating.
If the number of delayed lectures and lessons does not exceed 10% and the colloquia is well and excellent, the examination may be credited automatically. The rest of the examination must be taken orally.
