Course abstract

The course provides knowledge of textile fibers, yarns and fabrics for the acquisition of technology, structure, composition, properties, and an assortment of finishes, their application in product design development; presentation of the textile quality characteristics and their compatibility with the product to the requirements; with advanced and smart textile applications in product design, textile product recycling opportunities.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

knowledge and understanding of the textile classification, production, properties, production of yarn, fabric mining technology, fabric structure, characteristics, quality, progressive and intelligent textiles and their applications in product design creative development – tests;
skills to analyze, compare and evaluate the range of textile, fiber composition and quality of their compliance with the requirements of the final product and recycling options - laboratory works;
competence - is able to navigate the textile diversity. Able to assess compliance with the textile design requirements and today's technology. Able to track the life-cycle of textile and sees technical and organizational problems associated with textile recycling - independent works.

Course Content(Calendar)

Full time intramural studies:
1.The diversity of textiles in product design.
2.Textile fibers. Fiber terms. Classification of textile fibers. Basic properties of fibers, their characteristics.
3. Natural fibers. Plant country fibers. Cotton, mining, fiber structure, physical, chemical properties. Peculiarities of fiber burning. Linen, extraction, processing, types, fiber structure, physical, chemical properties. Peculiarities of fiber burning. Other vegetable fibers (hemp, jute, etc.).
Laboratory work: Textile fiber classification, properties and burning characteristics I, (2h)
4. Natural fibers. Animal State Fiber. Sheep wool, use, extraction, wool types, pre-treatment. Wool fibers and their structure, breakdown, physical, chemical properties. Peculiarities of fiber burning. Other animal wool (goats, camels, dogs, etc.). Natural silk, creation of cocoons. Raw silk, pre-treatment, physical and chemical properties of fibers, peculiarities of combustion.

5.Chemical fibers. Their breakdown. Stages of chemical fiber production. Spinning machines. Fayers. Creation of fibers. Artificial fibers, properties, peculiarities: rayon, acetate fibers, Synthetic fibers, properties, versatility.

6. Fabric acquisition technology: Spinning. Types, properties of textile yarns. Weaving.

7. Furnishing of fabrics: cotton, linen, wool, natural silk, chemical fiber fabrics.

8. Structure, composition and properties of fabrics. Structure of yarn and yarn. Woven fabrics for fabrics. Density of fabrics. Right and left fabric structure. Fabric fiber composition. Geometrical properties of fabrics and surface density. Mechanical properties of fabrics. The physical properties of fabrics. Optical properties of fabrics, color, pattern and coloring. Technological properties of fabrics.

9. Characterization of the assortment of fabrics. Assortment of cotton fabrics. Assortment of woolen fabrics. Assortment of silk fabrics. Assortment of linen fabrics. Assorted fiber fabric assortment.

Part time extramural studies:

All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar

Successfully written tests
Independent works have been successfully presented and defended
Participation in study tours
Exam (accumulative exam if all the above requirements are met)

Students are informed in a timely manner about tests and exam requirements. Individual consultations are available.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Controls - successfully passed if there is 50% of the max points
Laboratory works - credited / not passed
Independent study papers - observance of the set requirements, presentation
