Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to inform the students about the newest technologies and machinery used in milk and meat production, modernization possibilities of the existing animal breeding farms including technological design of domestic animal farms.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After acquisition of the course the students will have:
• knowledge – on animal breeding development trends in the world, the newest milk and meat production technologies, animal breeding machinery, development possibilities of animal farms;
• skills – to analyze and evaluate the planning of cow, pig and poultry farms as well as to up-date the existing farms introducing new technological solutions and the newest animal breeding machinery;
• competence – knowledge and skills are acquired that are necessary to up-date the existing and building new animal breeding farms.

1 Importance and state of animal husbandry in Latvia. Livestock regulations - 3h.
2 Modern cattle and calf housing solutions - 3h.
3 Modern pig and poultry housing solutions-3h.
4 Livestock farms, their division, optimal size, main structures, farm situation plan development - 3h.
5 The most typical variants of cow and pig housing planning -3h.
6 Practical work: Cow barn cross-section and layout development - 3h.
7 Feed distribution for cattle. Test on technological design of pet accommodation - 3h.
8 Feed distribution for pigs and poultry - 3h.
9 Laboratory work: Feed preparation and cow feeding equipment - 3h.
10 Laboratory work: Pig and poultry feeding equipment - 3h.
11 The latest cow milking equipment - 3h.
12 The latest equipment for milk cooling and storage - 3h.
13 Laboratory work: Cow milking equipment - 3h.
14 Laboratory work: Milk counting and pre-processing equipment - 3h.
15 The latest equipment and technology for manure removal and storage - 3h.
16 The latest microclimate systems. Test on the latest livestock equipment - 3h

Requirements for awarding credit points

The test with a mark is formed on the basis of the average mark of the assessments of both tests, as well as the assessment of the performance of practical work.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Preparation for tests using the literature indicated in the study program and consulting with the lecturer of the study course.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The evaluation of the study course test depends on the cumulative evaluation of the laboratory and practical work. A student can obtain a successful grade for laboratory and practical work if at least 50% of the set amount is met.
