Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to prepare doctoral students for independent preparation of scientific articles, which consists of elaboration of summary, introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion, drafting manuscripts according to the instructions for authors of the selected scientific journals, as well as communication with editors and reviewers.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge:
- knows and understands the current directions of research in the chosen field and sub-field of science;
- manages the research methods relevant to the topic of the thesis;
- knows the requirements defined in the instructions for authors of the selected scientific journal.
Evaluation – the plan for a scientific article is prepared.
Skills:
- able to formulate the title, aim and tasks of a scientific article;
- able to collect, analyze and critically evaluate thematically relevant sources of scientific literature;
- knows how to apply data processing and analysis methods and software, graphically or tabularly visualize research results;
- able to carry out original research that is at the level of internationally cited scientific publications.
Evaluation – the number of articles published in scientific journals.
Competencies:
- independently conducts research, prepares a scientific article as the first author or participates in the preparation of a scientific article in the team of authors.
Evaluation – discussion with the supervisor.

Course Content(Calendar)

Doctoral students independently:
1. Collect, analyze and evaluate the research results.
2. Prepare the manuscripts of scientific articles as the first author or in a team of authors including the sections of summary, introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion.
3. Submits the manuscripts to the selected scientific journals or proceedings of international conferences, communicates with the editor and reviewers, responds to the reviewers' questions, comments and suggestions until the manuscripts are accepted and published in scientific journals or proceedings of international conferences.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The number of scientific articles relevant to the study course taking into consideration the following evaluation:
- in scientific journals indexed in Web of Science Core Collection and/or Scopus (Q1 or Q2 – first author) - 12 CP;
- in scientific journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection and/or Scopus (Q1 or Q2 – in the team of authors) - 6 CP;
- in scientific journals indexed in Web of Science Core Collection and/or Scopus (Q3 or Q4 – first author) - 8 CP;
- in scientific journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection and/or Scopus (Q3 or Q4 - in the team of authors) - 4 CP;
- in scientific journals indexed in Web of Science Core Collection and/or Scopus (first author) - 4 CP;
- in scientific journals indexed in Web of Science Core Collection and/or Scopus (in the team of authors) - 2 CP;
- in the proceedings of international conferences indexed in Web of Science Core Collection, Conference Proceedings Citation Index and/or Scopus (first author) - 4 CP;
- in the proceedings of international conferences indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection, Conference Proceedings Citation Index and/or Scopus (in the team of authors) - 2 CP;
- approved patent application (abroad) - 4 CP;
- approved patent application (in Latvia) - 2 CP.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Doctoral students independently collect, analyze and evaluate the research results, study sources of scientific literature, prepare manuscripts of scientific articles, submit and communicate with the editors and reviewers of selected scientific journals until the manuscripts are accepted and published by consulting with the supervisor.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

In accordance with the amount of the study course, the required number of credit points is obtained - scientific articles are prepared and published in scientific journals or proceedings of international conferences.
