MatZ1002 [GMTR1002] Design Basics of Wooden Articles

Course abstract

Getting acquainted with the types and uses of wood and various board materials. Introductizon to peeled, peeled and grass veneers and their use. Introduction to the types of material joints in width, length and thickness and for unbreakable and demountable joints in different combinations. Getting acquainted with the details of the curve. Getting acquainted with a frame, drawer, shelf, furniture support, cabinets, desk, kitchen table, stools, chair, sofa-bed, armchair, chair-bed constructions. Insight into accuracy and use of tolerances. Principles of testing and evaluation of constructed furniture following the requirements of furniture EN standards, in laboratory conditions.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge of materials and properties used in the manufacture of wood products, types of joining of parts, constructions and functional dimensions of wood products.

Skills result in sketch and evaluate products according to the requirements of EN standards.
(Presentation to the audience, presenting the topic prepared at home, based on the awarded product)

Competence to create a furniture structure from appropriate materials and suitable connections, taking into account the size, static strength and durability requirements of EN furniture standards.
(Homework, where the existing furnasrdeiture and evaluation from the side of the constructive solution, as well as from the side of the requirements of EN standards is considered)

Positive and negative properties of solid wood as a material. Types of board materials, positive and negative properties. (7h, lectures)

8 Accuracy and tolerances of parts and connections. (2h, lecture)

Part-time extramural studies:
All the topics intended for full-time studies are covered, yet the number of contact hours is ½ of the specified number of hours.

Requirements for awarding credit points

To obtain a successful grade in the exam, which indicates completion of the study course, 2 tests must be successfully passed, and 3 homework assignments must be submitted and successfully defended.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The first homework on materials and their properties. (10h)

The second homework, in which students should independently analyze the available sources for the topic assigned to them, should be prepared as a presentation or presentation of an equivalent solution and presented orally to the course members, training the ability to speak, formulate and present in front of the audience. The topics in the course are divided individually, especially with the topics of the lectures, but these performances, as among the students, do not overlap. (27 hours)

The third homework is to evaluate the assigned furniture following the requirements of the standards, visually reflecting the standard standards, the identified conformances and personal recommendations for furniture improvement opportunities. (42 h
