Course abstract

Cut flowers and pot plants production in protected cultivation and open field.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Floriculture overview, trends, and business possibilities. Selection of crops for greenhouses, factors affecting cultivation, requirements, growing technologies, propagation, crop rotation.
Ability to create a greenhouse cultivation technology blueprint for one year. Identify and define more production-grown cut flowers and potted plants.

2. Characterization of ecological factors, yield-forming parameters. – 4/2 h
3. Technologies, possibilities, application of controlled growing conditions. – 4/2 h
4. Cultivation of garden flower seedlings for open field. Seeds, young plants, technologies, assortment. – 4/4h
5. Quality indicators of potted flower production and characteristics of the cultivation system. – 3/6 h
Control work: Assortment of garden flowers and growing technologies
6. Cultivation of cut flowers. Assortment. – 2/2 h
7. Roses.Growing technology – 4/2 h
8. Cultivation of flowering bulbs. – 2/2 h
9. Growing chrysanthemums. - 2 h
10. Agrotechnics of gerberas and other more commonly grown crops. – 2/2 h
11. Cultivation of indoor plants. Assortment, growing conditions. – 4 h
Control work: Assortment, cultivation and care of cutting flowers and houseplants.
Final thesis: Report and presentation on cultivation technologies.

Part-time extramural studies:
All the topics intended for full-time studies are covered, yet the number of contact hours is ½ of the specified number of hours.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Completed at least 80% of independent and practical work, presented and submited report.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Greenhouse tech presentation.
Potplants and annual plants presentation.
Independent research of scientific literature and professional knowledge on the issue (themes are chosen at the start of classes) to produce 8-10 pages of description and 10-minute presentation.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final grade of the course depends on the evaluation of the tests, practical tasks and report.
The student gets a passing grade if at least 50% of the test questions and practical tasks are answered correctly.
The final grade is calculated as the arithmetic average of the assessment of tests, presentations, and report.
