The goal of the course is to provide basic knowledge in international trade: theory, policy, and practice. It gives an understanding of key international economic relationships, why nations trade in goods, services, labour, and capital; implications of government interventions for foreign trade. Knowledge – students obtain knowledge on the history, role, theories, processes, and trends of international economic relations in Latvia as a country with a very open economy, they get an understanding of the dominant economic relationships arising if the Latvian economy interacts with economies of other countries, mainly EU member countries, in the modern globalised world and also their effects on domestic processes in the national economy of Latvia; skills – students can use their knowledge in making economic decisions at the levels of households, enterprises, and government institutions, taking into consideration the risks caused by the international context of these decisions and avoiding possible mistakes by considering the previous experience of other countries; competences – students gain knowledge and skills, which contributes to raising the level of wellbeing in Latvia, exploiting the advantages specific to it as a small country, which is a member country of the EU.
