Course abstract

Course of forensic veterinary medicine instructs different types of inspection, their procedural base, general methodology and order of designation, rights, duties and responsibility of expert. The study course includes forensic veterinary thanatology, traumatology, toxicology, inspection of material evidence and documents, inspection of veterinarian’s professional offence and learn the order of veterinary forensic statement – practical works.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Knowledge: Students have to learn types of veterinary forensic inspection, their procesular base, order of designation, rights, duties and responsibility of experts.
• Skills: Ability to use veterinary forensics inspection methodology.
• Competence: Ability to apply knowledge and skills analyzing veterinary forensic cases and ability to give answers to asked questions for expert.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Procedural foundations of forensic examination. Legal and illegal conduct. General methodology and order of appointment of veterinary medical expertise. Rights, duties and responsibilities of an expert. Veterinary medicine expert's opinion, procedure for giving it (4 h lectures, 2 h practical work).
2. Cruel treatment of an animal. Forensic veterinary thanatology, types of death, stages, causes (2 h lectures, 2 h practical work).
3. Forensic veterinary traumatology. Classification of mechanical injuries. Injuries caused by blunt objects. Injuries caused by sharp objects. Injuries from gunshot wounds (5 h lectures, 5 h practical work).
4. Asphyxia and hypoxia. Types of mechanical hypoxia (1 h of lectures, 1 h of practical work).
5. Thermal injuries in forensic veterinary medicine. Cooling and overheating. Frostbite and burns. Electrocution (1 h of lectures, 1 h of practical work).
6. Forensic veterinary toxicology. Types of poisons and poisoning (1 h of lectures, 1 h of practical work).
7. Expertise of physical evidence and documents. Animal welfare violations (1 h of lectures, 1 h of practical work).
8. Veterinarian professional error and accident. Legal and illegal conduct of a veterinarian, its review procedure (1 hour of lectures, 1 hour of practical work).

Requirements for awarding credit points

Passed Clinical and Epidemiological Case Analysis (CECA) work. Absence of lectures and practical work is not more than 20% of the total number of lessons. If missed lectures and practical works are more than 20% of the total number of lessons, then the course must be repeated.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Clinical and Epidemiological Case Analysis (CECA) work on veterinary forensic case, providing correct answers to questions from veterinary experts. The work consists of recording, analyzing and describing the data provided in the materials for work in the appropriate sequence, which is acquired during the Forensic veterinary medicine course, in order to give conclusions and provide reasonable answers to the questions asked for the expert. Volume at least 10 p. After submitting the written form of the work, it must be defended by presentation. The work must be submitted and defended within the deadline set by the course supervisor.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Students' knowledge and skills are assessed in accordance with the procedures specified in the tasks of the practical works.
The CECAworkof the study course is evaluated in accordance with the 10 point system scale criteria indicated in the LBTU Study Regulations. CECAwork must be scored with a successful grade in order to get the final grade of the study course "passed".
