Course abstract

The aim of the course is to introduce the place of animal parasites in the zoological system, their morphology, biology, lifestyle, relations with the host's organism and the environment, as well as animal invasion diseases caused by them - development cycles, pathogenesis, clinical manifestation and pathological anatomical changes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge of the interrelationships of humans, animals and parasites in the ecosystem. - four tests
Skill – to find an explanation in the evaluation of parasitofauna; analyze and discuss the spread of invasive diseases, diagnostic methods of parasites;
constantly diagnose disease agents, determine treatment and prevention - practical works.
Competence - to be able to analyze and explain the harmful effects of helminths and parasitic protozoa in host vertebrates - cows, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, dogs, cats, forest and other animals - practical works.

1. Introduction to parasitology (tasks of parasitology, history of development, general characteristics of parasitoids, methods) – 4h
2. Trematodes, invasive diseases caused by them 1st test Invasive diseases caused by trematodes – 12h
3. Cestodes, invasive diseases caused by them. 2nd test - Invasive diseases caused by cestodes - 15h
4. Nematodes, invasive diseases caused by them. 3rd test - Nematode-induced invasion disease - 35h
5. Protozoa, invasive diseases caused by them. 4th test – Invasive diseases caused by protozoa – 14h

Requirements for awarding credit points

Successfully passed four tests.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students should independently study the latest scientific articles on the relevant topic indicated by the teaching staff.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Students' skills are evaluated according to the order of the tasks assigned in the practical work.
Study course tests are evaluated according to the 10-point system scale criteria specified in the LBTU Study Regulations.
