Course abstract

The II part of the course introduces to art`s styles, movements, schools and artistic`s groups of the 20 century in Europe and USA. The content of the course promotes acquirement of diverse techniques of painting, graphic and sculpture in context of the modern art.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledges- to comprehend, analyse and assess theories and conceptions about fine art`s development in the territory of Latvia from the beginning till nowadays, but the 2nd part introduces the Western and U.S. 20th century art movements and their founders.
•Skills- to evaluate Latvian art development in the context of Europe art, to select the most apropriatable painting or graphic technique for creating an artistic work, to combine diverse artistic tehniques, to evolve creative abilities and imagination of pupils.
Competence- to use knowledge and abilities to conduct the lessons of visual art for children and adults, to select the most appropriatable art techniques to accomplish the tasks for an art lesson, to direct and encourage growth of trainees in visual art, to elaborate the standarts of judgement to evaluate pupils` artistic works.
Assessment: A presentation showing students the practical work on the topics and tasks acquired in the program.

2. 1909 - 1916 Figurative painting on the boundary of abstraction.
3. 1912 - 1915 The conclusion of figurativeism.
4. Geometric abstractionism.
5. Anti style currents in the interwar period.
6. Realism.
7. Sculpture.
8. Modernism triumph in architecture. Bauhaus.
9. Culmination of technical experiments after 1945.
10. Geometric and concrete abstractionism after 1945.
11. Anti-art.
12. Realism and Art of Actionism 1958 – 1975
13. New Realism in Sculpture.
14. Figurative painting since 1970.
15. New media.
16. Visit to the exhibition.
List of Practical Works:
1. Copies of works of art and creative works in various techniques are made.
2. Preparation of the base for painting in oil, watercolor, acrylic, tempera and pastel techniques. Knows how to prepare the substrates, knows how to use them. It is competent to use in further work.
3.Aromatic geometric composition in the chosen painting style (format A3) Know the styles of painting. Can distinguish them. It is competent to apply knowledge and skills in further work.
4. Still life of subjectspainting of subjects in the technique of painting chosen in the cubism manner (format A3). Know the cubism manners, know how to use it practically further work. It is competent to use in further work.
5.Collage in Constructivism and Pop Art Style (Format A3) Knows Constructivism and Popart Styles, is able to use them. It is competent to use in further work.
6. Studies of Abstract Expressionism Techniques (A3). Knows the style of expressionism, knows how to use it. It is competent to use in further work.
7.Abstract composition with synthesis of techniques and techniques (format 40 X 40 cm) Knows composition theory, various painting techniques, is able to use it in practical work.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Attendance of classes, independent work, prepared and presented, test with mark.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Studies of Modern Art Literature and Internet Resources, which are compiled by creating a presentation and writing a paper about the chosen art direction. In parallel with the studies of modern art theory, copies of works of art and creative works in various techniques are made
If necessary, the work started in the lesson is completed independently.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The test score depends on the cumulative assessment of the practical and independent work of the semester:
• Attitudes towards teaching,
activity during the learning process,
timely execution of independent work: 2, 5 points
• Independent work show: 10 points
• Presentation: 10 points
• Report or exhibition review: 10 points
By collecting the specified number of points, the student receives a maximum score of 10 points.
