Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to provide students with the knowledge of development stages and styles of Latvian architecture and landscape garden art in relation to the historic periods. Students learn how to apply respective knowledge of architecture and landscape garden art history in design. The study process contains lectures, field trips and a course project of a territory in a culture heritage landscape.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

•Knowledge: students have knowledge of architecture of Latvian manors, castles and traditional manor and castle garden designs, creation of gardens and parks of Riga city and other cities, the art of Georg Kuphaldt, Andrejs Zeidaks, Karlis Barons, prominent garden architects. 1. Practical work.
•Skills: students are able to explore and use compositions, shapes and plants typical of various styles of garden design and landscape architecture. 2. Practical work.

•Competences: students have the competence to characterize, compare and evaluate styles of architecture and landscape architecture of the project area, analyse specific featur

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Ancient landscape manor parks in Latvia. 4h lectures
2. Landscaped gardens and parks by Landscape Architect Coopfalt. 2h lectures
3. Landscape architect Zeidaks. 2h lectures
4. Excursion to Latvian historical palace and manor parks. 2h lectures
5. History of Riga Gardens and Parks. Cofalt and Zeidak's creative work. 2h lectures
6. Excursion to Riga Gardens and Parks. 2 hours lectures, 2 hours practical work.
7. Liepaja, Ventspils and Kuldīga parks and historical landscapes. 4h lectures
8. Excursion to Liepaja, Ventspils and Kuldīga parks. 4 h lectures
9. Cesis, Valmiera and Sigulda parks. Field trip. 2 hours lectures, 2 hours practical work.
10. 1. practical work. Research of historical territory and historical materials. 4 h practical work.

12. Reconstruction or revitalization approaches in Latvia and in the world. 4h lectures

16. Examination

Requirements for awarding credit points

Marked exam.
Class visiting should be at least 75%. Works submitted after the specified time (unless there is a justifiable reason) will have their grade reduced in accordance with the assessment rules approved by the institute.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

1. practical work. Study of historical materials in a methodological cabinet or archival space, collection of information and comparison of cartographic materials with the current situation.
2. practical work. Creating visual models to represent the incorporation of stylistically relevant elements into an existing landscape space without addressing the detailed spatial plan.
3. exam. A proposal for a revitalization or reconstruction approach to a particular historic park, providing insight into possible solutions, stylistic elements, and materials.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The end of the course is an exam with a mark in the 10-grade system. The mark consists of the content of the completed works, the presentation and the quality of the presentation. Each work is graded with a grade, the middle is a final grade. If the student has not attended all lectures, then at the end of the course a test on lecture topics is taken. The accuracy of the test performance affects the final grade.
