Course abstract

Small animal reproduction is a part of veterinary medicine's andrology and gynecology, which investigates dogs, cats, and other small animals physiology, pathology and reproduction's specifics.
Accomplishes the examination of reproductive organs as well as their anatomic and physiologic peculiaritys, research in cases of desease, sets the diagnosis and executes the appropriate treatments. It researches peculiarities and pathology of fertilization, pregnancy, puerperal and postnatal. Solve the problems of fertility. Provides students with the knowledge of the latest principles and methods of diagnostics, treatment and prophilaxes. This science is well developed and very widespread in the world.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge about small animal andrology and gynecology include knowledge on male and female reproduction system anatomy, physiology, neurohumoral regulation, processes of fertilization, pregnancy and peri-partal period as well as diseases diagnostics and treatment ; Assessment of knowledge with a written quiz.
Skills to recognize and interpret pathological processes of the reproductive organs functions; Skills are evaluated after completing the tasks specified in the practical work.
Competence: in accordance with the acquired knowledge and skills independently and in groups to analyze and evaluate animal infertility problems.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Introduction. Female anatomy of genital organs. Hormonal sex cycle regulation, sex hormones; Puberty, the peculiarities of the first sexual cycle; Sexual Cycle Peculiarities for Dogs, Cats. Ovulation detection methods. Case analysis. Vaginal Smear Preparation Practical Work. - 2 h lectures, 2 practical works.
2. Pregnancy physiology for dogs, cats. Preparation of animals for pregnancy - vaccination, wiping, for flea treatment. Medicines during pregnancy. Pregnancy diagnosis - hormonal tests, palpation, ultrasonography, X-rays. Animal nutrition during pregnancy. Pregnancy pathology - resorption, abortion, infections, premature birth. 2 h lectures, 2 practical works.
3. Physiology of birth, the diagnosis and management of a problem with normal and difficult birth - Medical and surgical treatment of dystocia. Requirements for anaesthetic agents during cesarean section; Postpartum diseases. Newborn care and intensive care. Physiological peculiarities of the newborn. Newborn diseases. Newborns' keeping, feeding peculiarities, weight. 3 h lectures.
4. Female animal genital examination. Morphogenesis, normal anatomy and pathology. Vagina, Vestibulum, Vulva - Diseases and Therapy. Uterine diseases, congenital pathologies. Cystic endometrial hyperplasia. Pyometra, modern therapies. Medication therapy. Surgical treatment. Mycometra, hydrometra. Endometritis. Uterine tumors. Case analysis. 3 h lectures, 1 practical work.
5. Ovarian Disease. Ovarian cysts. Ovarian tumors. Sustained ovarian syndrome. Other ovarian diseases. - 1h lecture.
6. Anatomy of mammary glands and physiology of lactation. Mastitis. Milk gland tumors. Diagnosis and treatment options. Fibroadenomatosis for cats. False pregnancy for bitches. Case analysis. - 2 h lectures, 1 practical work.
7. Contraception options - Surgical and medication methods. Sterilization and castration for dogs and cats. Choosing the right time. Postoperative complications. Hormone therapy in the reproduction of small animals. Reproductive diseases and hormone therapy. Medicinal abortions for bitches and queens. Case analysis. 3 h lectures, 2 practical works.
8. Reproduction peculiarities for male animals. Reproductive tract investigation possibilities. Infertility. Prostate illness - benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatic and paraprostatic cysts. Prostate tumors. Cryptorchidism. Other male animal’s reproductive tract diseases and therapies. Semen collection and choice of AI. - 3 h lectures, 2 practical works.
9. Application of visual diagnostics in reproduction of small animals - 1h lecture. Written test.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Successfully completed test.
Lecture attendance more than 70 % and practical work attendance 100%.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Student skills are assessed in accordance with the procedures specified in the tasks of the practical work.
The study course test is evaluated in accordance with the criteria of the 10 point system scale indicated in the LLU Study Regulations.
