Course abstract

Course of special pathology instructs pathological physiology and morphology of animal organs and systems at macroscopic and microscopic level. The second part of the course includes morphology and physiology of endocrine, lymphatic system, CNS, skeletomuscular system, reproductive system and cutaneous pathology, their causes, pathogenesis, macro- and micro morphology, formulation of morphologic diagnoses.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: to describe causes, mechanisms of endocrine, lymphatic system, CNS, skeletomuscular system, reproductive system and skinpathologic processes; their pathomorphological appearance and recognize pathophysiological processes of the organs – 6 tests.
Skills: to identify and describe changes of the tissues in gross specimens from necropsies and images of gross lesions, recognize pathologic processes in gross and histological specimens, formulate morphologic diagnosis based on lesion appearance; describe pathophysiological changes of the organs - practicals.
Competency: according to acquired knowledge and skills discuss in groups and answer independently about pathologic cases using appropriate terminology, explaining pathogenesis of lesions, their causes and prognosis – home works.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Successfully completed six tests and exam.
Absence of lectures and practical worksare not more than 30% of the total number of lessons. If missed lectures and practicalworks are more than 30% of the total number of lessons, then the course must be repeated.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Home works are evaluated in accordance with the tasks of the practical works.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Student skills are assessed in accordance with the procedures specified in the tasks of the practical work.
The study course tests are evaluated in accordance with the criteria of the 10 point system scale indicated in the LLU Study Regulations.
To take the exam, all tests must be successfully completed.
The exam is organized in two parts:
• written test with 100 questions evaluated in a 10-point system, the lowest successful grade is given if 70% of all questions are correctly answered;
• oral part - a ticket for any pathology that is assessed in accordance with the criteria of the 10 point system scale indicated in the LLU Study Regulations.
The ticket can only be answered after a successful test. The joint examination mark is calculated as the average mark of the exam test and the rating of the oral answer.
