Course abstract

The course is aimed at the acquisition of knowledge and skills in the professional foreign language with the express purpose of extending the students` professional qualifications and improving the students` communication skills with foreign students and specialists ( including work placement abroad, participation in guest lectures, work in joint venture companies etc.) The program envisages the mastering of skills in all aspects of the language – reading, speaking, listening and writing.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students know terms from the field of:
- non-renewable and renewable energy resources; types of power stations; generation of electric current at power stations, turbines, generators, distribution and transmission of electric current, transformers, substations (Test No 1);
- ecological problems, global warming, greenhouse effect; types of alternative energy - wind energy, solar energy, wave energy, biomass energy, geothermal energy; electrical safety, electric shock, security measures (Test No 2).
Students are able to apply professional terminology and skills: in writing an essay, summaries, business letters; orally in discussions, dialogues, role plays, giving a presentation.
The assessment according to the 10 point scale.

1. Main branches of agriculture. Farmstead. Research and training farm Vecauce.
2. Energy policy of the European Union. Energy policy of Latvia.
3. Types of energy resources. Non-renewable and renewable energy resources.
4. Oil and its processing. Coal and peat.
5. Types of energy resources. Generation of electric current at power stations. Hydroelectric power stations.
6. Distribution and transmission of electric current. Thermal power stations.
7. Test 1. Energy efficiency. Ecological problems. Greenhouse effect.
8. Types of alternative energy. Wind energy. Solar energy. Wave energy.
9. Biomass energy. Sources of biomass.
10. Alternative energy. Geothermal energy. Heat pumps.
11. Nuclear energy. Nuclear power stations, principles of operation and safety aspects.
12. Electrical safety. Electric shock. Security measures. Instructions.
13. Electrical appliances in agriculture. Lighting, heating and ventilation of farms.
14. Test 2. Business communication. Formal letters. Telephone conversations.
15. Basic principles of making Power Point presentations.
16. Presentation about a topic related to the speciality.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Assessment: Examination. The examination consists of: a terminology test, a presentation. A student is allowed to take the examination if there are: successfully written 2 tests, timely completed homework, completed individual work (reading of professional texts, the prepared PowerPoint presentation on the selected topic, the glossary of terms). Tests and homework are with a positive evaluation. The number of the missed classes shall not exceed 20%.Examination.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

1. Individual work:
a) reading of the independently chosen professional texts (the amount: 20 000 characters);
b) prepared PowerPoint presentation and oral presentation (8-10 minutes) in front of the class;
c) a written summary;
d) submitted glossary of terms (30 translations of terms, 20 definitions).
2. Pair or group work presentation (5 -7 minutes) on a topic related to the study course.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The examination grade is calculated as an arithmetic mean of grades obtained in two examination tasks. The grade in the terminology test is successful if at least 60% of the answers are correct.
