Course abstract

The aim of the course is to introduce students with the strategies and competences necessary for consecutive interpretation, focusing on the practical development of interpreting skills English-Latvian-English. Students acquire and develop skills of interpreting business talks, presentations, workshops, seminars as well as community interpreting. Themes for the texts to be interpreted are related to everyday topics, business communication, university education issues, business activities of companies and economic processes.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Knowledge - on theoretical aspects of consecutive interpretation; strategies and competences necessary for the interpretation, note taking techniques.
• Skills - students are able to apply theoretical knowledge in the specific interpreting situation, they are able to translate spoken texts in the target language distinctively and intelligibly, providing accurate translation and adequate use of terms related to the acquired themes.
• Competence - students are able to use independently and creatively the acquired knowledge and skills of consecutive interpretation English-Latvian-English in the work of a specialist of external relations.
