Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to develop Latvian communication skills of the students so that they are able to speak and understand simple monologues and dialogues on everyday topics. The interactive language learning method is used, all four language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) are developed; the vocabulary learning is based on social and personal issues simultaneously providing elementary knowledge of grammar and pronunciation. The language proficiency level corresponds to A2 (CEFR).

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students have acquired terms, reading and use skills in the following areas:
-shopping habits, seasons, university studies, dialogues (Test No. 1);
- man, animals, their well-being (Test No. 2);
- free time, hobby, culture, music, visiting, sports.
Students are able to perceive the main idea in short texts. Able to engage in short conversations about yourself, shopping, and university studies. Can write short information.
Competence – students have the Latvian language proficiency level relevant to A1 (CERF). Linguistic competence is sufficient to understand and use simple expressions and elementary phrases for providing specific needs in everyday life, academic environment and in relation to the future profession.
The assessment according to the 10 point scale.

1. Introduction. Shopping habits. Goods and services.
2. Seasons and Time in Latvia. The cases of noun.
3. University studies. Reading the text with understanding.
4. Reflexive verbs. Questions and answers.
5. Conversations. Dialogue creation. Test 1.
6. Man. Diseases. Word formation.
7. Animal world. Domestic and wild animals.
8. Animal welfare and care. Test 2.
9. Conversations. Dialogues, interviews, questions. The verb conjugation.
10. Riga, the capital of Latvia. Use of prepositions with accusative.
11. Free time and hobbies. Lexis. Use of prepositions with dative.
12. Cultural events. Music. Concerts. Use of prepositions with genitive.
13. Visiting. The tradition of giving a village bribe. Test 3.
14. Legend of Lāčplēsis. Narrative. Conversations.
15. Types of sports. Sports activities. Repetition of the study course.
16. Final examination work.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Assessment: Test (with mark).
It is made up of cumulative assessment. Active work in classes, successfully written three tests, included homework. The number of the missed classes shall not exceed 20%.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Home-work done according to requirements.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The cumulative assessment is composed of the grades in tests and activity in classes. Homework should be a positive evaluation.
