Course abstract

Students acquire themes on systemicity, forming, development and institutions of EU, and education systems of its countries, and information nets, European Qualifications Framework in the life-long learning process, Bologna process, education as a means of development of positive relations among persons, social groups and nations. The accent is put also on the themes of EU in the process of globalisation and the fourth industrial revolution. The importance of EU basic documents in education is outlined in the course. The students demonstrate skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation of theoretical conclusions in coherence with the results of practical assignments. One public presentation according to previously worked out criteria is at the end of the course.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: understand and able to explain information about EU forming, development and institutions, and education systems of its countries, and information nets, European Qualification framework in the life-long learning process, Bologna process, education as a means of development of positive relations among individuals, social groups and nations – practical works.
Skills: analyse forming, development and institutions of EU; analyse: education opportunities offered by EU and development of education area, Bologna process, development of secondaru professional education, qualifications’ framework, necessity of life-long learning and understanding among cultures – practical works.
Competence: able to assess and use knowledge and skills on EU forming, development and institutions, EU education area and offered opportunities, and education systems – an independent work (presentation).

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Sytemicity of the world and education, the definition of system. – 2 h.
2. Historic forming of European Union, its symbols and values, development, action goals and principles, expanding – 4 h.
3. EU institutions and their functions, rights, economics – 4 h.
4. EU in the context of globalisation and the fourth industrial revolution – 2 h.
5. EU spotlights, outlining the spotlights of EU Council and EU Commission in EU House – 4 h.
Practical works: discussions, mind maps, group works, the method “Learning Station”.
6. Learning society – the requirement of the modern era. Orientation for life in the society for sustainable development – 2 h.
7. EU education area and spotlights – 2 h.
8. The importance of Europe and Latvia qualification frameworks in education and labour market – 2 h.
9. European Higher Education Area – Bologna process and EU– 2 h.
10. Development of secondaru professional education in EU – 2 h.
11. Assessment of the systems of education/career support in individual EU contries – 6 h.
The independent work: presentation on one of the themes demonstrating deeper understanding and presentation skills.

Requirements for awarding credit points

80% lecture attendance, successful assessment of the independent work and practical works.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The independent work. Deeper understanding of one of the individual themes and presenting skills (speaking in front of the audience with a presentation).

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment of the study course test mark depends on the cumulative evaluation of the independent work and practical works.
The assessment of the independent work and practical works take place in accordance with the criteria laid down there in.
The test mark is the arithmetic mean among an independent work and practical works assessments.
