Course abstract

While working on their qualification papers, students systemise, master and extend their theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of business, develop their economic way of thinking, strengthen skills in analysing urgent business problems, doing economic studies and performing calculations, tackling business and management problems, applying modern information technologies, employing statistical and/or mathematical as well as other methods and in justifying their business decisions.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students will be able to:
1. demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of theoretical and empirical research in business and management - qualification paper, a review of the qualification paper, the presentation and defence of the qualification paper.
2. Demonstrate the knowledge of the legal framework for business - qualification paper, a review of the qualification paper, the presentation and defence of the qualification paper.
3. Define the relevance of the topic researched, the research aim and specific research tasks, select and employ the most appropriate research methods to produce the qualification paper - qualification paper, a review of the qualification paper.
4. Process, analyse and systemise information needed to produce the qualification paper - qualification paper, a review of the qualification paper.
5. Draw conclusions and make proposals by analysing information - qualification paper, a review of the qualification paper, the presentation and defence of the qualification paper.
6. Independently structure the pace of production of the qualification paper - qualification paper.

Requirements for awarding credit points

A qualification paper is written and defended at the Institute of Business and Management Science and defended at an open meeting of the State Examination Commission

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

A student writes the qualification paper (computer typeset, 40-45 pages in size without annexes) according to the topic chosen independently, consulting the supervisor of the student. A successfully pre-defended, fully formatted and supervisor-signed qualification paper is submitted by the student to the Institute of Business and Management Science at least 10 days prior the day the defence meeting is held. The procedure of production, supervision, submission, pre-defence and defence of a qualification paper is regulated by the Guidelines for Writing and Defending a Qualification Paper. Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The qualification paper is defended at an open meeting of the State Examination Commission. Criteria for the evaluation of the qualification paper are as follows: relevance of the topic; achievement of the aim and the execution of the tasks; application of the methods; structure and layout of the qualification paper; bibliography; presentation skills.
Criteria for a reviewer of the qualification paper are defined in the review form (available in the Guidelines for Writing and Defending a Qualification Paper. An instructional aid for students of first-level professional higher education programme “Business Studies” of the Faculty of Economics and Social Development. Jelgava, 2018).
The mark of the qualification paper is calculated as an average of the reviewer’s mark and the marks given by State Examination Commission members.
A student has failed to defend his/her qualification paper if the State Examination Commission has given a mark of lower than 4 (almost satisfactory).
