Course abstract

The course provides students with basic knowledge of the substance and nature of management and the role of it in interaction between the internal and external environments of the enterprise. The course deals with the history of management theory, management techniques and functions and the delegation of the functions. The course builds up the skills, competences and the way of thinking needed for entrepreneurs and managers.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the substance and nature of management processes, a methodology for management process analysis and organisational management – a test, practical assignments, a seminar
2. Determine and analyse their potential for being a manager and leader, comprehend the competences and skills needed to manage a group, a team or an organisation – group work, situation simulation, problem-solving, a seminar
3. Reasonably choose and successfully analyse management processes at an organisation by use of the technical tools of management – practical assignments, group work, a test, independent work
4. Plan personnel according to the needs of the enterprise, organise personnel selection and assessment – practical assignments, group work, a test
5. Acquire information and perform a simulation of the management process of an enterprise – practical group work
6. Communicate with entrepreneurs to acquire information about enterprise management issues – independent work
7. Responsibly plan the completion of the assignments given, draw reasonable and substantiated conclusions on the techniques and functions chosen for the management of the enterprise – practical assignments, group work, discussion, situation simulation
8. Effectively work in a team, delegate and coordinate responsibilities, assume responsibility for the results of group work – group work
9. Independently define and critically analyse enterprise management processes and problems, comprehend and apply management techniques and functions – independent group work
10. Choose and apply the managerial competences needed for a particular situation in order to manage a group, a team or an organisation – practical assignments

1. Fundamentals of management theory. Management functions and techniques.
2. Management theories, the evolution thereof.
3. Management in an organisation. Organisational culture.
4. Planning, the nature and kinds of it.
5. Motivation and incentives.
6. The role and kinds of communication – information and information exchange at enterprises.
7. Control, the kinds and role of it in decision-making.
8. Personnel management, the nature and policy thereof.
9. Decisions, their nature and kinds. Principles of team building and the management of a team.
10. Conflicts, their nature and kinds and solutions thereto.
11. A manager, the role and nature thereof in an organisation. Social responsibility of the manager.
12. Management styles, their effectiveness.
13. Power and authority, their nature and effects on management processes.
14. A leader, leadership theories.
15. The role of a manager and leader in change and innovation processes.
16. Stress and oneself (time) management.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Two tests have to be passed, independent group work has to be done, practical assignments have to be performed and seminars and practicals have to be attended during the entire semester as well as a written examination has to be passed.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The student has to independently prepare for the tests, perform practical assignments and prepare for seminars on the following topics:
1. Consistency of organisational goals and values to ensure the development of the enterprise (2 hours).
2. Assignments and games building up the skill to convince and influence (2 hours).

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final mark consists of the following pieces of assessment: Test 1 (15%), Test 2 (15%), independent group work (20%), practical assignments/seminars (10%) and a exam (40%)
