Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to acquaint with theoretical knowledge and promotes the practical applicability of theoretical knowledge in the field of project management, as well as develops students' research skills and abilities in project development. The study course develops an understanding of project management, techniques, methods, tools, project structure, planning and implementation.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge. Knows the concepts of project management, project characteristics and project classification (1st test); knowledge of the nature of the project life cycle, phases and project management system (2nd test).
Skills. Ability to explain and discuss project implementation, monitoring, project evaluation, as well as results and impact assessment in a reasoned manner (1st discussion); Able to discuss and navigate the Latvian and European Union guidelines, regulatory framework and strategic documents that can be used in project management (2nd discussion).
Competence. Ability to create a scientific report of a specific topic and present the results of research (report and its presentation during exam).

3. Identifying a project idea. - 1 hour
4. Conducting a project feasibility study. Forming a project team - 1 hour
5. The role of a project manager and management styles - 1 hour
6. Project implementation organization. - 1 hour
7. Determining project objectives. - 1 hour
8. Determining and analysing project risks. - 1 hour
9. Project resource planning. - 1 hour
10. Planning the administrative and implementation staff of the project. - 1 hour
11. Planning the internal control of the project. - 1 hour
12. Characterization and justification of the project sustainability. - 1 hour
13. Calculating project costs. - 1 hour
14. Monitoring the implementation of the project plan. Identification, analysis, management of project deviations and changes. - 1 hour
15. Project evaluation. - 1 hour

1. The concept of a project and the essence of project management. Project features and classification of project types. 1st test. (2 hours)
2. Project life cycle, its stages. 2nd test. (2 hours)
3. Project cycle management methods. Project institutions, management levels. (2 hours)
4. EU fund planning periods and their differences. Hierarchy of strategic documents and their role in project management. (2 hours)
5. National action programs and their importance in project management. (2 hours)
6. Latvian and European Union regulatory framework, guidelines, regulatory base and strategic document framework. Practical work. (2 hours)
7. Project implementation, monitoring, project evaluation, evaluation of results and impact. Seminar discussion. (2 hours)
8. Preparation of project application. Evaluation of project application and application of criteria. Project and project presentation. (2 hours)

Part-time distance learning:
All topics specified for full-time studies are covered, but the number of contact hours is reduced to half of the number specified for full-time studies.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Exam. The final assessment is cumulative on the following topics and tasks: 1) The concept of a project and the essence of project management. Projects by their characteristics and classification of project types (1st test - 20%); 2) The project life cycle, its stages. (2nd test - 20%); 3) The ability to explain and discuss with arguments about project implementation, monitoring, project evaluation, as well as evaluating results and impact (1st discussion - 10%); 4) Able to discuss and navigate the Latvian and European Union guidelines, regulatory framework and strategic documents that are used in project management (2nd discussion - 10%). 5) Exam: presentations of reports on previous research (research report and its presentation – 40%).

Study process in part-time distance learning is organised in accordance with the Order of the Vice-Rector of Studies No. 2.4.-5/59 On distance learning procedures at LBTU. Study courses are scheduled for each semester according to the study plan. The students learn the topics included in the study course independently, using the materials created and placed by the lecturer in the e-studies (Moodle). Feedback on the learning of lecture and seminar topics in distance learning is organised in the form of self-assessment tests, discussion forums and independent work, as well as in face-to-face or online consultations, lectures and final examinations according to the timetable.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Literature studies, preparation for the tests, preparation of the report on previous research.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Students must prepare for a discussions (20%), they must pass two tests (40%), and prepare a report on previous research and present it during exam (40%). 10% corresponds to one point on the 10-point assessment scale.
