Course abstract

The course provides a comprehensive description of key personnel management functions with practical examples of implementation of procedures. The study course provides knowledge and skills on how to better produce the application documents, participate in job interviews, design and maintain employment relationships, as well as organize the work process in accordance with the legal and regulatory acts of the Republic of Latvia and the general principles of personnel management.
The aim of the study course: to provide students with theoretical and empirical knowledge of the basic principles of personnel management in order to build up their professional and personal competence for entering the labour market.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

KNOWLEDGE
Students will be able to:
Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the concepts, functions and basic principles and needs of staff policy and strategy choices in the industry as well as the course of the recruitment process. (Independent task, group task, Test 1)
Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of procedures for formalizing and maintaining employment relationships and the relevant legal framework. (Test 2)

Professional skills
Ability to produce documents for applying for a job. (Independent task)
Ability to identify the objectives and tasks of personnel management within the organisation, independently obtaine, process and analyse information on the various functions of personnel management and the factors affecting it. (Independent task, group task)
Ability to choose the most appropriate types of recruitment and perform job interviews. (Independent task, group task)

Ability to responsibly plan the completion of the assignments given. (Independent task)
Ability to work effectively in a team, delegate responsibilities and coordinate the performance thereof, as well as assume responsibility for the results of the group's work. (Group task)

Part-time studies and part-time distance learning:
All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The student can earn a pass mark (taking a formal test with a mark) if lectures have been attended as well as independent task and group task have been performed.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The independent task and group task assigned, research assignments or other assignments given have been performed in alignment with the topics covered in classes and a mark has been earned.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The netting rating shall consist of:
• Independent task “Preparing a job advertisement.” (10%);
• Independent task “Preparing a CV and a motivational letter.” (15%);
• Group task “Job interview.” (25%);
• Test 1 “Personnel management functions, strategy, policy. Recruitment process. Job interviews. Selection of staff.” (25%);
• Test 2 “Formalizing an employment relationship. Employment relationships and their management. Setting the working procedure. Working and rest time. A notice of dismissal.” (25%)
