Course abstract

The course provides students with knowledge of the role of ethics and etiquette in mutual communication among officials and private persons as well as of norms and standards of behaviour for business contacts and formal events. The course teaches norms of behaviour accepted in the society according to modern trends in etiquette, placing a particular focus on international differences in the norms, and builds an understanding of the role of behaviour culture that facilitates and promotes mutual cooperation. The course builds up speech delivery and presentation skills. The skills developed by the course allow shaping a positive and socially responsible image of the organisation, which, in its turn, contributes to its clients’ trust.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

KNOWLEDGE
1. Students will be able to: demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the nature of ethics and etiquette in the national and international contexts, their roles in the business environment and their evolution and concepts - Independent work, practical assignments and tests.
2. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the types of ethics and etiquette, the role of compliance with ethics and etiquette as well as relevant topical issues in various countries - Independent work, practical assignments and tests.
3. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the types of business communication and the role of the dress code in shaping a professional image at work and in international communication - Independent work, practical assignments and tests.
SKILLS
1. Identify ethical problems and tackle them by applying the norms of ethics in professional activities - Discussions in classes.
2. Recognise the norms of etiquette among the other systems regulating behaviour, assess its role in the society and differentiate various kinds of etiquette - Independent work to be done individually and in a group.
3. Establish interpersonal communication by applying the norms of business ethics - Practical assignments and discussions.
4. Adhere to a proper dress code and choose presents according to the situation, as well as create and apply appropriate business etiquette attributes - Independent work.
5. Responsibly plan the completion of the assignments given - Independent work.
6. Give precise information, prepare a presentation and speak in publicē - Practical assignments and independent work.
7. Work in a team, delegate and coordinate the fulfilment of responsibilities, effectively plan and manage the work and assume responsibility for the results of the group work - Group work.
COMPETENCE
1. Analyse, compare and work with various ethical issues as well as identify, define, assess and solve problems of an ethical nature and apply the norms of ethics in professional activities - Practical assignments to be done individually and in a group.
2. Select and apply a pattern of behaviour appropriate for a particular situation as well as to represent the enterprise/organisation and cooperate with various stakeholders - Practical assignments to be done individually and in a group.
3. Build up and demonstrate presentation skills, choose the most effective verbal and nonverbal communication tools and adapt the presentation and speech to the particular audience, including a foreign one - Practical assignments to be done individually and in a group.

3. Business communication. The first impression. Greeting and getting acquainted with someone. (Lecture 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)
4. Diplomatic etiquette. The role of etiquette and protocol in daily and professional activities. (Lecture 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)
5. Non-verbal communication and etiquette. (Lecture 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)
6. Verbal communication and etiquette. Management of business conversation. (Lecture 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)
Multiple choice test 1 (1.-6.topic). (Practical – 1 hour)
7. Modern technologies for business telephone conversations and correspondence. Netiquette. (Lecture 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)
8. Preparation of a curriculum vitae and a motivation letter. Job interviews. (Lecture 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)
9. Business etiquette in the workplace. The most common mistakes in business etiquette. (Lecture 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)

All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar

Requirements for awarding credit points

Formal test with a mark
The Mark consist of:
• 60% Individual and group practical work
• 15% Multiple choice test 1
• 15% Multiple choice test 2
• 10% registered attendance

10% are equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale.
