Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to understand the essence of management, processes and functions in the company, organizations and the development of the manager's personality. Students gain an understanding of the essence and content of management, the management system in Latvia and in the world, about the company's internal and external environment. Gets acquainted with the history of the development of management theory, learns the functions of management and the need for their delegation. During the practical classes, students get acquainted with the competencies necessary for a leader, develop the skills necessary for a leader in leading a group, team and organization.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of theoretical and empirical research in management sciences, the essence, development, methods and functions of management (lesson discussion, test);
• Knowledge and ability to determine the structure of the organization, its types, types of culture (discussion in class, practical work);
• Knowledge and understanding of leadership styles and manager's professionogram, power, authority (practical work);
Professional skills:
• Skills to choose and apply the methodology necessary for the analysis and implementation of the management process (independent work, practical work, presentation);
• Ability to present and explain the results of their work (presentation);
General skills:
• Ability to cooperate and responsibly plan the assigned tasks (practical work, independent work);
• Ability to argue, explain one's opinion and discuss the essence of management processes, decision-making and the importance of control in the management process (discussion in class, independent work, practical work);
• Ability to critically analyze management-related problem situations and describe the causes of conflict by providing solutions (test).
Competence:
• Is able to independently formulate and critically analyze the company's management processes and problems (practical work, test);

• Is able to apply management methods and functions, to choose the competencies necessary for the manager (practical work, independent work).

1. Management, its essence, management theories. Management functions and methods (lecture - 1h);
2. Organization, organizational structure, types, culture (lecture - 1h);
3. Manager, management styles, their efficiency (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
4. Power, authority - influence in the organization's management processes. Leader (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
Test (practical work - 1h);
5. Planning. The essence of planning, types (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
6. Decisions, their essence. Decision making process, methodology (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
7. Control, its types and meaning in the organization. Quality management, quality assurance standard ISO9000 (lecture - 1h);
8. Motivation, motivation theories, role in the management process. Material and intangible motivation (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
Test (practical work - 1h);
9. Communication, its essence, communication process and peculiarities. Types of communication. Feedback (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
10. Personnel management, personnel management goals and functions. Personnel selection process and tendencies (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
11. Internal labor relations organization. Mobbing, bossing (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
12. Team management, team building principles, group dynamics (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
13. Conflicts, their essence, types, possibilities of resolution (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
14. The concept of generations and its role in management (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
15. The art of performance and persuasion. Persuasion methods (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
16. Time and stress management. Methods for setting priorities, delegation (lecture - 1h, practical work - 1h);
Test (practical work - 1h).
Part time extramural studies:

All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar

Requirements for awarding credit points

Two tests are planned within the course. One independent work (presentation “Management in Company X”) and practical work to be done during practical work in the classroom. Final assessment of the study course - a test with a mark, which consists of an accumulative assessment of study results.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Within the study course, 48 hours are allocated for independent studies, which are organized as follows: preparation for tests (20 hours), preparation for group work (12 hours), preparation for independent work (16 hours).

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final assessment of the study course consists of:
1. test on the essence of management, functions and methods, management styles, planning - 30 points;
2. test on decision making, motivation, communication, personnel management, conflicts - 30 points;
independent work, presentation “Management in company X” - 30 points;
practical work on team building - 10 points.

10 points make up 1 grade.
